What is the underlying cause of this?

Damn I feel for you. I just passed my 2nd stone last Sunday - hate them SOB's.

Had them twice in high school. Absolutely miserable.

Went through a bout of them in 2015. One day I felt like I had the flu and was pissing brown, must have been a small one that was moving around and causing an infection that I eventually passed. A couple of months later I was going to bed and had a dull pain in my back. Woke up the next morning and could barely breathe and threw up a couple of times and decided I better go to the doctor.

I’ve never had those. A cousin of mine ended up in the ER because the pain was so bad and he did not know what it was. Is it really that bad?

I have had them once and I was lucky because I caught them early and I was given meds that breaks them up and it was that bad for me..
A friend of mine had them awhile back and the pain was so bad he had to be brought to the ER twice in one weekend. He was in tears and this was before I had mine so when I first thought I had mine I will be honest, I was scared as hell.

I've had 2 over the years, and yes, they can be that bad. First one came on in the middle of the night with no warning. It felt like Mike Tyson had punched me in my right flank. Pain wouldn't go away after a few hours so off to the ER I went, since I had no idea what was happening. Second one wasn't as bad. I chugged a ton of water and managed to jump up and down for a few minutes and it passed. I tried the jumping because some docs will recommend going on a roller coaster to shake the stone free. Jumping up and down was as close as I could get to the violent motion of a roller coaster.

All I know is the pain from the doctor digging up my dick for the stint, made me feel like brave heart being disembowled

Gout aint really fun either.
I guess I was lucky to get gout instead since my prostate might not open enough to pass a stone

I’ve never had them but I’ve had sciatica and now I am less judgmental of folks’ pain thresholds.
I get sciatica every so often and it takes me down. Just last year I had my first kidney stone. It took me to the ground writhing in pain. When we got the hospital and the doctor came and saw me he said, "oh yeah, you're doing the kidney stone dance"
I hope to God I never get one again.

No worse than reading your threads.

I am 43. Drink Alcohol and guzzle milk. Rarely drink water…I need to change that. No stones, yet.

Yes, it's really that bad. Hell, I thought I was dying. Forehead sweaty, hands ice cold, and as some have said, felt like I was being stabbed in the back over and over.
First I thought I would puke, then felt like I would pass out.
Had to call an ambulance.
After about 8 hours in the hospital, I passed it out.
Never want to do that shite again.

Drink beer. It’s helps get the flow going and you can piss them out.
I know you’re joking but I was 27 and the lsu bama game was on when I started feeling the pain. I had one a year prior so I knew it was coming. Since I had a few in me, I decided to go ahead and get really drunk, then pass it like John Wayne. An hour later, I was crying like a baby in the ER. My drinking made it worse because they were hesitant to medicate me.
I’m 53 and hadn’t had one since. Made many lifestyle changes but not sure which one helped.
To all my brothers in stones, i pour my drink out.

Energy drinks are the devil.
Who came up with this logic? early 50's. 1 energy drink every morning for last few years. Never had a kidney stone in my life. From reading this thread never hope to get one.

Dude, I get it. I had my first and it was too big to pass. Got it blasted, had a stint put in that was supposed to only be in for 10 days. Turned into 21 days because of a snowstorm and ice keeping the office closed and scheduling. It was 21 days of the purest hate for everything and everyone.
When you're sitting at an airport and you're all, "that guy can go to the restroom and urinate without pain or worry. Not me. I'm over here wanting to punch holes in sheetrock."

My first kidney stone was when I was at lsu. Went to the emergency room writhing in pain and dripping with sweat. Triage nurse took one look at me and said ‘you’ve got a kidney stone”. Kind of chuckled and said to have a seat. After an hour and a half, I barfed all over the waiting room….they took me to the back!
