For home defense get a full sized 9mm and a 12 Guage.
Go to a local gun range where you can rent pistols and shoot a few. Buy the one you feel comfortable with.
Then go to the range and practice with it until you no longer flinch when you pull the trigger and you can accurately hit the center mass of the target without trying too hard

I've been to Bass Pro, Cabelas and Academy recently. The ammo and gun supply at all 3 stores was significantly depleted. Thankfully I'm stocked up on ammo already.
