This is exactly how i learned to tell the difference in the 5th grade, from my strict old no-nonsense Catholic schoolteacher.. and i still find myself using it today when in doubt about proper usage.

Pet peeve of mine and I caught it as well. Downvotes mostly coming from those who don't understand why it is incorrect or just don't care.

The male competitor used proper grammar.

Several years ago, the valedictorian of the LSU graduating class was asked what she was doing after graduation. When she answered "me and some friends...." I just prayed that she wasn't an English major.
