I decided to be "carb conscious" about 3 months ago. I avoid bread, pasta, potatoes, chips, cookies, cake, candy and rice except for a small amount in gumbo. First couple weeks were challenging but my body has adjusted and I don't crave those things anymore. I still drink a beer or two and occasionally will indulge in a margarita with chips/salsa every other week or so. Needed to make a shift towards being more healthy without going all in on a plan that probably wouldn't be sustainable. This works for me.
I don't exercise much other than running 1-2 miles, 1-3 times a week
Point of reference...I'm 50 and have lost 13 lbs since mid-Feb.

Eat nothing but protein (not all meats, broccoli has good protein) for 10 straight days, then slowly reintroduce complex carbohydrates 250 calories per day until you have a balanced meal, protein and carbs) eating a total of 1200 calories a day spread out over 6 meals. Eat at the same time everyday and eat within 15 minutes of waking up. This combined with an active lifestyle will shed weight, and increase lean muscle tissue. Stop all sugar and soda and energy drinks. Drink 8 10oz glasses of water per day (unless you have CHF). Enjoy seeeing your physical, then mental life elevate.
ETA: at age 50 make sure you are doing resistance (light weight training) in addition to cardio. You need the resistance training to help keep your bones strong and helping prevent osteopenia and osteoporosis.

I am now on day 48 of extreme low carb, in fact most days I don't think I have any carbs at all (all meat diet). I have lost a total of 39 pounds and had my blood checked a few days ago. All of my numbers came back exactly where I want them to be.
The first 10 to 14 days I did have issues with having enough energy to do everything I want. After that my energy levels have been great. The only exercise I do is walking and I do a lot of it - I average 6 to 7 miles daily.
I have been doing a lot of research on carbs and sugars. I am beginning to believe that sugar is as bad for us as smoking, possibly even worse. I am in the middle of a book called The Case Against Sugar and I am in awe of what I am learning. Pick it up if you can.
Good luck with everything and keep us posted.

Whole 30 isn't low carb. Eat a potato.

If I'm cutting carbs, does eating brown rice have to go too or can I still have it in moderation?

Try cauliflower rice. I discovered this the other day and man it has helped me get over my rice cravings. 25 calories and 5 grams of carbs per cup.

You should do what works for you. Weight loss on its own boils down to calories in/calories out. In my mind, there are three methods to get there: (1) Food restriction (such as low carb). With this method, you restrict types of foods that are dense in calories, which most high carb foods are. You're able to eat pretty much however much you want, which "volume eaters" usually prefer. If you're the type to pile food in your pie hole, you might prefer low carb. (2) Portion restriction. You eat whatever you want, but in portions that do not go over your calorie deficit. (3) Fasting. Skipping breakfast or snacks or whatever. Eating a large meal once or twice per day instead of small low-cal meals.
People go with (1) (low carb) often because if you're tall/big, it requires little-to-no counting. You don't have to weigh food or count calories because it is *really* hard to go over your calorie deficit when you're just eating lean proteins and veggies. But that doesn't work for everyone. I've hated "meat and side" type of meals most of my life. So I do a combo of (2) and (3). A potato is surprisingly low in calories. If you're not going overboard with your meat/veg, work in a potato every so often. YOU'LL BE OKAY

I'd recommend cauliflower fried rice, mashed potatoes and pizza crust to start (Google recipes). Another popular pizza crust is Fathead Pizza.
OP if you want to do something where you can eat rice and potatoes (and some other starches and grains) look up The 17 Day Diet. The name sounds gimmicky but it is effective. After the first 17 days you can add some carbs back in and brown rice, basmati rice and potatoes are included (but restricted). For optimal loss you cycle through ( but you can stay in cycle 3 forever if you want - the owner of one of the FB groups lost 100 lbs that way) so there will only be 17 days at a time where you're not allowed these things. It's very doable.

Need to make sure you're eating a lot of fat and drinking a lot of water. I'm down about 80lbs since September doing Keto. Highly recommended if you can stick to it and not cheat. If you're going to cheat, low carb diet isn't the way to go.

Also, I'll remind you of this:
If it were easy, everyone would do it. Don't be a pussy. Stick to whatever you decide and force the future to bend to your will - in this case, weight loss.

Be sure to get some Ketostix so you can make sure you're peeing out ketones. Once you are, the pounds will fall off, like a pound or 2 a day.
