You got the dog as a puppy. Dogs don’t just snap and kill kids without reason. If you raise the dog properly it will behave properly. If you raise the dog poorly, you shouldn’t have it in the first place.

But if you read the OT often, you'll see that's exactly what they do! Hence, the concern.

A lot of those attacks are from dogs who are half pit

Good on you for adopting, but tell your wife to quit being a fricking idiot.

Extreme outliers aside, there is always a causal chain for behavior. Again, dogs don’t just snap.

Statistics do not bear this line of thinking out
The raw statistics indicate that genetics are at play with he breed, at least somewhat. Individual dogs are just that. There are cases of pit bulls growing up with a family and still attacking family members and there are cases of pits rescued from horrible conditions and being rehabilitated to become wonderful family pets. But the overall numbers are reason for a person with small children to be concerned, regardless.
A good article in The Post and Courier
quote:
A recent study indicated that between 1982 and 2012, 426 people were killed by dogs in the United States and Canada. Of these deaths, 233 (54 percent) were caused by pit bull attacks, while pit bulls comprise only 4 percent to 5 percent of the dog population.
quote:
In that same period, there were 3,394 cases reported where a dog attack resulted in bodily harm, of which 2,235 (65 percent) were caused by pit bulls.
An interesting note I have read in the past is that most of those are by males who have not been neutered. it was something like 85-90%. Sorry, I don't have the link currently.
When kids are involved, I think an excess of caution is not a bad thing.

Those statistics tell me that pit bulls are more dangerous than other breeds when they attack. If Chihuahua’s were 5x bigger, we’d have a bunch of stupid ‘Chihuahuas are indiscriminate killers” threads.
If the concern is taking in an already grown pit bull around kids, I get it. This is a puppy we’re talking about.

Hundreds of stories with Pits where this isn’t true.
If I find a bobcat kitten and raise it properly will it be safe around my family?

I mean why even take the freaking chance??
Pit anything is trash breed with too much chance of instability.

How do you know the pits you’re referring to were raised properly? You don’t. And the likelihood that a properly raised dog randomly attacks anyone is extremely low.
And dogs are been bred to live with humans for millennia. You obviously don’t feel safe around pit bulls, so stay away from them. Just don’t pretend to know what you’re talking about.

I think we found our resident trashy pit bull owner

Nah, just happen to work in close proximity to several animal behavior experts who I’d bet have a bit more knowledge than your average OT poster.

That's not all those statistics tell me, or most rational people in my opinion. The same study showed that
quote:
doberman pinschers, another breed often singled out as dangerous, and comprise about 1.5 percent of the population, were responsible for seven (1.6 percent) deaths in a 30-year-period.
quote:
If Chihuahua’s were 5x bigger, we’d have a bunch of stupid ‘Chihuahuas are indiscriminate killers” threads.
But they are not 5 times bigger. Chihuahuas do bite the most but they tend to defensive or reactively nip. The way pits attack and bite tend to be more aggressive and seemed to be triggered by less in many cases (a purely anecdotal opinion on my part).

The concern is broader, it relates to taking in a shelter dog (or any dog, really) with unknown genetics. The breed was specifically bred to specific traits that make it generally more aggressive than other breeds. There is no denying that.

You completely missed the point, as evidenced by your first line referring back to another statistic that fails to disconfirm that pit bulls are just more dangerous when they attack.
And yeah, like I said, I understand the concern of taking in an already developed animal with no knowledge of their last experience. Have to leave that for responsible, intelligent people with lots of time on their hands.

I have two rescue dogs.
Chihuahua mix - hates other dogs, hates kids, skeptical around other adults.
Pit bull mix - loves everything, loves kids, lets the neighborhood kids hug him (maybe he’s just sizing them up). He also lets the 15 lb chihuahua mix man handle him all the time.

You have no fricking clue what you're talking about. APBT's were bred to be dog aggressive, while maintaining a strong love for humans and a desire to please. The reason being, fighting dogs had a tendency to change hands fairly often and were also around many strangers every time they were matched. Not to mention the need for both handers to be able to reach in and grab the combatants at any time during the fight without threat of being bitten. They needed to be extremely pleasant toward people and were in fact regularly culled for showing any amount of human aggression.
Educate yourselves on real facts. These threads are always so full of ignorance.
