I’m just busting balls. Am staffs are one of the breeds people label as Pits. I wouldn’t want to own one either.

Anything with Terrier or Bulldog is in the Pitbull type category.

I bet there are people here that lose their shite over pitbulls who don’t even know they own one.

I was always told that there's only 1 real "pitbull" And that it was the American bull terrier which is a mix between 2 other dogs that was bred solely for pit fighting but the guy who told me that could be wrong. Idrk.

False. It's the Amaerican Pit Bull Terrier.

False
Like most breeds we know today, it started from a mix of several different breeds.

bred solely for pit fighting

Originally, yes. That contributes zero to any human aggression though. The old dog men almost always culled (killed) human aggressive dogs. They bred good dogs.

Is it?
If most people would educate themselves and not just fly off the handle on a message board, they would understand where the term Pitbull comes from.

quote:

Not only do American Pit Bull Terriers need better public relations, but there is also a lot of confusion between the actual breed and the dog “type.”
Pit Bull is a description for a type of dog, but American Pit Bull Terriers are a breed. Other breeds that rightfully fall under the term “Pit Bull” include the American Staffordshire Terrier, the American bulldog, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Any dog in the bully breed can be classified as a pit bull, and all are derived from dogs that were originally a cross between some type of bulldog and a terrier.

So Bostonians are like pitbulls? That’s stupid

No you idiot, it means you don’t condemn the whole based on the actions of a few.

I’d like to add that if I saw a stray pit running around, I’d avoid it like the plague due to the breeds rep.

But if I adopted a puppy that is sweet as can be and shows the ability to be trained then I’ll love that dog regardless of breed.

I get the concerns that some of y’all have, I just think the temperament of that particular dog doesn’t suddebly change due to the fact that the owner discovered it is part pitbull.

In the end, the OP handled the situation perfectly. He found a loving home fir the sweet puppy, he didn’t just bring it back to the pound like trash.

Couldn’t of said it better

ETA: I adopted my two as terriers. DNA test later revealed they were AM staffs. I was never a Pitbull person, but they turned out to be the most loving dogs I’ve ever seen.
I have a different outlook on the type as a whole, now.

Your comment was uninformed.

Is the Black Russian Terrier a pit?

Scottish Terrier?

Norfolk Terrier?

That's a really cute pup. All I can say is thank you for doing the right thing and finding a good home for him rather than be an a-hole and drop him off at a shelter as so many people do.

Glad he has a good home.

Maybe. I don’t know, do research. I was under the assumption from what I read my comment was accurate.

If not completely accurate. Okay, I apologize.

My terriers turned out to be. That’s really all that’s important to me.

You are right. But that can be said for any domesticated animal. It's not really about temperament though. It's about instincts and ability to seriously harm, which will always be present.

I’d argue that those instincts are present in every breed of dog.

The only instinct I’d truly worry about with the described puppy in the OP would be the protector instinct. I’d worry that the dog would bite someone or some dog it deemed as a threat to the family. I wouldn’t worry about it turning on the family itself.

Anyway, I’m doing all this arguing for pits with the full knowledge that I would never adopt one. My reasoning for never adopting one is because I don’t want a dog that everyone is afraid of.

My particular breed of choice is the labordore retriever. They are the sweetest dogs in the world.

My brother has an 8 year old black lab abd my 1 year old son absolutely loves her. He pets her, grabs her tail, climbs on her when she’s laying down, and all she ever does is wag her tail and lick him on the face.

This dog doesn’t have an aggressive bone in her body but one time a cat came to close to my son when we were in our yard and she went nuts on it. She’d have killed that cat if she caught it.
