Los Angeles got a 3.6 today as well.

The end of the world on Sept 23 predictions may be starting to worry me

So this is pretty cool. This buoy became unmoored around 9AM CDT:

quote:

Station 42060 went adrift on 9/19/2017 and the last report from its moored position was at 1400Z. It is still transmitting valid observation data, which continued to be reported here, but not from the location above.

It recorded a 30 foot wave right before it came unmoored, but it is still recording data. It is currently drifting about 35 miles from the center of Maria, and has drifted about 11 miles over the last 4 hours.

Zoom in and check the swirlies in the eye. Those be the mesovorticies rds speak of.

Pinhole eye still looking very solid and yes shrinking. Anyone member Wilma's absurdly small like 2 mile across eye? Maria creaping into that territory.

Maria is essentially a very long track EF-4 that's rain wrapped.

Those bracket shaped clouds in the NW part of the outflow are pretty fascinating on the loop.

...300 PM AST POSITION UPDATE...
...RAINBANDS FROM POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC MARIA NOW MOVING OVER THE
VIRGIN ISLANDS AND PUERTO RICO...

St. Eustatius recently reported a sustained wind of 36 mph (57 km/h)
and a wind gust of 53 mph (85 km/h). A weather station located on
the eastern part of St. Croix at Cotton Valley recently reported a
wind gust of 48 mph (77 km/h).

48 MPH wind gust on St. Croix and Maria is still 10 hours away.

Sounds like that wind field estimate is conservative.

On the hurricane force winds, perhaps, but the NHC says 34kt winds extend 100nm to the NW, which puts St. Croix inside of those winds. A 48 mph gust makes sense.

Jose goes from off of Nova Scotia at 00z to over DC at 12z

Then Maria tries to sling shot into the NE but Jose is too weak to pull off the trick.

Almost looks like she's just wrapping an outer wall around her.

And yes, the Euro run was kinda bonkers.

EWRC @ landfall might be helpful in this case.
