The tree that snapped and fell on my house thinks the wind was stronger than reported.

I may go do that, though it might be a bit late for it now.

It is for Ida. You can do it for any storm going forward.

The weird thing about Ida is that the gusting period seemed to be even with the sustained wind period.

It seems like usually in every, say, two minute period you may get 1:45 of regular sustained winds with a 15-20 second gusting phase but Ida seemed to be pretty much a 50-50 split.

Made for one crazy (and long!) night.

Huge difference between the airport, south to the 10/12 split to Highland Rd

Rode it out in south Baton Rouge and was amazed how different the damage looked compared to the goodwood area. They had to use chainsaws to open our street up and you could barely tell there was a storm up airline

That's because we were on the western side of the eye of a very strong and still decently in tact hurricane. The gradient on the western side of the eye was very, very tight. A mile made a huge difference. The damage here in far northeast Ascension was tremendous. My parents live in Donaldsonville and when I drove there the day after to check on them, it looked like a strong tropical storm blew threw. I was shocked since they are further south and I figured they'd have had it worse than I did but nope. The angle the eye came in from was key.

I have seen screen shots from three different vessels docked in Fourchon that recorded gusts over 185 knots.

northeast Ascension, if that helps, where the western eye wall passed.

Probably about 20 miles west of where the eyewall passed.

I rode it out in Raceland and yes it seemed like the gusts came more frequent than usual.

I was getting 95+ MPH gusts right before we lost power on my weather station in Lafayette.

It should be noted that two ships moored at Port Fourchon reported instantaneous wind
gusts of 194 kt and 150 kt as Ida passed over.

Absolutely not. Check your distance again, baw.

Thought the western eyewall was over Manchac

Those gusts weren't included because the particulars couldn't be verified and the equipment may not have been calibrated.

And they weren't setup correctly to measure sustained winds.

No, the eastern eye wall was over Manchac. The western eyewall went right over the far northeastern sections of Ascension Parish as the eye itself passed right over Livingston.

The eye was 12 miles wide at that point?

My dad is in PV, said it was probably 75 mph winds. He thought Gustav was worse.

Roughly, give or take a few.

I'm very close to Port Vincent. Your dad was drunk that night.

Hang on, is your dad a Gustav baw?

I'm curious myself. The max wind gust for my area was listed as 90 or so mph with a sustained windspeed of 75 or so. We were in the eyewall for a good 3+ hours and the damage done to the trees all around was staggering. Most of them were all defoliated and some debarked badly. I don't buy those wind speeds.

What was the height of your anemometer ? as you know, official wind readings are measured at a height of 10 meters or approximately 33 feet above ground level.

Negative. I believe worst he saw in the area was Katrina; but other circumstances probably contributed to that.

He is just down the creek from you.

I think the highest gust I had was 121. Location between Nola and BR just south of I10. We hit gusts over 100 many times.
