This is the first step toward cyber immortality. #itshappening

Memory loss seems to be inescapable. But one maverick neuroscientist is working hard on an electronic cure. Funded by DARPA, Dr. Theodore Berger, a biomedical engineer at the University of Southern California, is testing a memory-boosting implant that mimics the kind of signal processing that occurs when neurons are laying down new long-term memories.
The revolutionary implant, already shown to help memory encoding in rats and monkeys, is now being tested in human patients with epilepsy — an exciting first that may blow the field of memory prosthetics wide open.

Within 50 years, humans will be able to have their consciousnesses uploaded into cyberspace and have effective immortality after their body dies.

I'm pretty sure there are about 140 people with fake brains in Baton Rouge most weeks this time of year. Go to that big tall building near the river, you will find them there.

unfortunately, your "stream of consciousness" will not likely be continuous. aka you die. your copy (who, as far as other people are concerned) lives on.

My ex and I used to go back and forth on a lot of political/philosophical stuff, but we actually got into a legit argument of brain implants. She hated the idea, saying it made us less human. I said that it could make us better versions of ourselves and significantly improve our society on a technological level. Think of what we could do if we could take the knowledge of a scientist that specialized in biology/chemistry and implanted it into one that specialized in electronics. Doctors, engineers, and lawyers could have all relevant info implanted into them and simply spend a year or two being taught how to implement the information.

That was my initial thought, too, but what if instead of uploading to a different site, they gradually replaced the biological neurons in your brain with circuits, until it's all wired? Or manmade neurons that are indistinguishable from the original? The cells you were born with have been completely replaced several times in your life, but you are still you. Why couldn't it work the same with manufactured replacement parts?

The self is an illusion anyway. If they are able to successfully transfer all of your memories and perfectly replicate your brain function then your consciousness will transfer
