Huey P. Long Fieldhouse Renovation Finally Funded

A joint venture of two Baton Rouge firms—Remson | Haley | Herpin Architects and Tipton Associates—has been awarded a contract by LSU to develop a plan for renovating and expanding the historic Huey P. Long Field House. Once renovations are complete, the 120,000-square-foot project will house programs within the College of Human Sciences & Education. Plans include a greenspace and a water feature to pay homage to the swimming pool. “As one of the most iconic buildings on the LSU campus, the design plans for the renovations of the Field House will ensure the building meets the technological requirements, research capacity and environmental criteria of today, while preserving the historical relevance and integrity of the structure,” says Chris Remson, founder and principal of Remson | Haley | Herpin, in a prepared statement. For the project, San Francisco-based M. Arthur Gensler Jr. and Associates will act as the joint venture’s design partner.

Constructed in 1932, the field house served as the original Student Union until the current union was completed in 1964. The building also housed a barbershop, ballroom, post office, soda shop and gymnasium.
