How'd the term "limited edition" take off?

I understand it speaks to the volume made but it is more accurately denoting the opposite.

Like, "how would you like this limited edition car?"

"What's so special about it?"

"It only has 3 wheels"

"Can I have the full edition with 4 wheels?"

"Sure, it's cheaper, but you're missing out"

This world is backwards.

I got the limited edition Kirby Puckett baseball card when I was a kid.

The twins had a great team back then.

I still have it.
