I agree with the teacher, but the message was poorly communicated. Mr. _________ comes off as a complete arse.

The parent's response, while terribly written, is valid because of the teacher's poor communication skills.

What grade? If this is first grade then it is kind of rough. If it is high school it is fine.

Teacher. We have a couple who have taken a somewhat hardline and it’s not that difficult to do the work.

Both do need some communication training but the parent is an over the top enabler.

Kids been fricking around with remote learning. And they know it.

I do hate how the teachers can’t all be on a standard format to maintain consistency.

Aside from that, the pandemic has exposed both the public school system and the parents who fail to support their kids in their schooling.
amen

The systems my kids are using in face to face school suck. But you just gotta do the work. Parent sounds like one of those

Does not compute. I hope she doesn’t teach English.

ETA: the teacher’s sentiments are mostly correct.

The mom’s email reminds me of these posts I see on social media that drive me crazy. They basically list out a bunch of excuses and then say something to the effect of “doing the bare minimum is noteworthy because you’re making it through these tough times”

I'll just go with I'm mixed on this.

If I'm a teacher and most of my class is struggling (that's what this sounds like) then I might need to take a look at how I'm presenting the content, the work I'm assigning, etc. Especially right now, because kids are struggling. Even the good ones.

Also, if I'm a teacher, I'm sending this notice long before the day before grades are due. frick all that last minute nonsense.

That said, if I'm a parent, before I loose my shite I'd want to see the work my kid has missed and conference about it. Could be my kid is slacking and I don't know it. Or my kid isn't doing the work (if they're doing work from home).

I'm with the teacher on this one. Sure, you need to use positive reinforcement and build up your students, but there also comes a time to state the naked truth as it is without sugarcoating it.
My big take-away from this is that, as many of us have suspected, in-person education is essential to an education. Virtual classes are serving one purpose, namely, providing a paycheck for teachers. The students aren't learning much and cannot interact as necessary. I have a feeling that this is a wasted year and many (even most) will need to repeat this year's education.

I think a healthy dose of tough love is fine.

Besides, I doubt the school will let the teacher fail anybody after all is said and done. It would make them look bad.

Pretty surprised how many folks on here are pro-teacher given how many shite topics there are making fun of teachers and how worthless they are.

I'm pro-parent on this one. The teacher's email was condescending and full of conjecture. The fricking battles I have with my daughter over online work are ridiculous and certainly not helping our relationship. Speaking with other parents, we're not the only ones dealing with this. For this teacher to insinuate that it's all laziness on the part of students and parents is very, very insulting. No doubt, I can appreciate the teacher's frustrations. But if we want to play the conjecture game, her inability to empathize and adjust to circumstances, coupled with the broken arse grammar she used, tells me she's not a competent teacher.

I don't understand this. Do parents realize they are not helping their kids?

When I was in school my mom used to tell me.. And she did the same thing with my brother and sister. "If I get a call from the principle or a teacher, don't even waste your time telling me your side of the story because I am going to believe them".

And there were times when teachers called her and as soon as she says "Mrs ____________ called me today..." I would think to myself "frick".. Because in my teenage mind my part in it wasn't as bad as the teacher made it out to be and I knew that it didn't matter. At that point I just hoped she didn't end up saying "Im telling your daddy".

Teacher.

Accountability doesn’t cease during crises. The earlier today’s entitled generations learn that fact, the better.

The teacher maybe could have worded things less harshly, but the only thing I think is wrong with his message is this:
quote:

You don't participate you don't get the participation grade

In groups, some people interrupt, talk constantly, and monopolize the conversation. Others stay quiet until they think they have something relevant, and then stay quiet again when they get interrupted. Unless the teacher is really really good at managing a discussion (and I bet he isn't) simply requiring participation is not fair.
