The U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) states "Steer clear of multilevel marketing plans that pay commissions for recruiting new distributors. They're actually illegal pyramid schemes. Why is pyramiding dangerous? Because plans that pay commissions for recruiting new distributors inevitably collapse when no new distributors can be recruited. And when a plan collapses, most people - except perhaps those at the very top of the pyramid - end up empty-handed."

I don't know much about pyramid schemes but I know Advocare has been in business for a very long time. If they were doing somethig illegal, I'd think they woulda got shut down by now. Same goes for amway, Mary Kay, arbonne, etc You wanna see a crappy one, look up Mona Vie and the dude who created it. He's always getting sued

I did a friend a favor and watched a family friend of his pitch Nerium Skin Cream.

It was so cultish I was having a hard time not laughing. She was like "I EARNED AN IPAD AND A LEXUS IN THE FIRST YEAR!"

Then she played a video that was hard to watch about people becoming rich in 2 years and shite.

One phrase that was repeated over and over and over was "Relationship marketing". I was biting my lip so hard trying not to blurt out PYRAMID!

This demo lasted like 2 hours and they let us try the lotion. It smelled like dick and burned my hands.

A guy I know is constantly posting on FB how Advocare allowed him to retire at 27 and live life by his "own design." It seems very cultish and sort of creepy.

Can the OT shed some light on this?

I know a doctor that is pushing it hard, and she is making bank. I also know she supplies a girl who said she is making $1200 a week from Advocare.

That is so fricking unethical. Whats her name? She should lose her license to practice medicine.

That stuff is overpriced and cheaply made. The fact a doctor would use her position of influence to push this for a profit is absolutely disgusting.

ETA:
And of course people trust her. She is well-educated and a doctor. Both things people wrongly associate with trustworthy.

I work in healthcare and deal with doctors everyday. If one of our doctors was caught doing this they'd be so fired and reported to the medical board immediately.

I know a few Chiros that do this but they are not real MD's so I doubt no fricks given.

How a Chiro can pop a back and then give nutrional advice blows my mind.

Also, in order to make money, you have to have a huge network...like a dr...to sell to. I used to get calls all the time from people trying to get me to sell body by vi, juice plus, Mona vie. The list goes on & on

"Hey have you heard about ______? It's a really great business opportunity that allows you to take control of your life. It's multi-level marketing/network marketing. It's not a 'pyramid scheme' at all because unlike those pyramid scheme companies, our company actually sells a product. And that product is endorsed by ________. We also have the most competitive compensation structure in the industry. My friend __________ has been selling for just ______ months. They already have a _______, drive a ______ and lives in ________. They plan on retiring in _________ years. How's that sound to you?"

Than a chiropractor? Are you serious?

Not saying they are a nutritionist, but at least they went to medical school. They've seen and learned A LOT more about the human body than a frickign chiropractor.

ETA:

They conflict/interactions of medications, they know what undernourishment looks like internally, they can better estimate tolerance levels of any substance, etc.

this. It's not Advocare is a system like ideal protein where there's a protocol to follow. It's just a catalog of supps. And these docs aren't selling it directly anyway. They put a receptionist in charge and just let it do what it do

Also, Penn and Teller have a great "bullshite" episode called "easy money" on this stuff. You can watch it on youtube. I'd link it but there's nudity in it.

while all that is 100% correct. In my experience, the extent of "advice" given to patients is "you need to start exercising & eat better" really doc? Thanks

A doctor probably is more qualified than a chiropractor but not by much. Only ten percent of medical schools require one class on nutrition for graduation.

They still know how organs work. And how the body digests and metabolizes different substances.

I was a history major and I'm as qualified as a chiropractor to give people nutritional information.
