Depends... If you're investing in a retirement then you do not need to have tons of money in the bank unless you just like having tons of money in the bank. If you have a stable job and money invested in your future then I'd say enough money to cover emergency situations is sufficient.

I'd be a millionaire if I had listened to a college buddy and bought bitcoin in 09

A lot of "bitcoin millionaires" have nothing to show for it. There were massive problems associated with converting bitcoins back into cash, and a lot of bitcoin exchanges ended up being massive scams, rife with embezzlement, hackings, and outright fraud. And the state of bitcoin in 2016 is even worse.

I'm not going to get into it any more than this. You probably did yourself a favor by not buying bitcoin in '09. Very few people actually got out at the right time.

By 40, you should have your Age times your salary divided by 20. By 50, you should have your age times your salary divided by 10. By 60, you should have your age times your salary divided by 5. Note, this includes retirement savings vehicles as well.

Is this counting your spouse's retirement accounts too?

$1,000,000 by 60. Maybe up that to $ 1.25 due to inflation. Also depends on lifestyle, I know a few retirees who live on $2k a month have a small fully paid off house and no car loan.
