But Lakeboy, how proud are you of the fact that New Orleans is such a tourist destination?

I get it, locals are way too cool for the French Quarter. But all those tourists that you love go to the French Quarter and leave with the impression they are given. But yeah, just laugh at those from surrounding areas for "not knowing better"

You obviously don't get it because this is just wrong. Locals don't hate the Quarter, they hate Bourbon. If you don't know this, then you probably shouldn't speak so definitively about it...

Because the BR Napoleon Syndrome has been a thing for decades. If you spend a few days in NOLA right now and this is what you come away with, then having BR as part of your TD CV is a clue to say you have a bias. Not really that difficult...

I don't follow the OP, nor do I care to. But I spend a fair number of days in NO. Probably as many as I spend in BR at this point. I have no dog in this hunt anymore, but my point is that the FQ is the tourist Mecca of the city. And people from NOLA are very proud of that fact. But when a negative of the FQ comes up, they try and deflect from the one part of the city that gives them the tourism bonus that they love so much.

Do you have property in the quarter?

Maybe the best solution for the BR vs NOLA is to realize both have glaring issues that need to be rectified ASAP.

I hate bourbon street

New Orleans has taught me to flat out ignore homeless people and not acknowledge people on the street who try to talk to me.

Don't wave your hand. Don't say "sorry man". Just keep walking.

I expect a lot of homeless drunks in the quarter. What I hate are the grifters on St Charles and Louisiana. That's so far uptown. They beg for change and then go to the gas station to buy cigarettes and beer.

Landrieu needs to pull a Bloomberg and buy them a one way plane ticket to another city.

Saying that NOLA is pretty hot RIGHT now... It has long been a tourist destination and host of many things, with a large population. What's funny is that he thinks all of a sudden it is some huge overnight tourist destination.

Only two pages into what will inevitably be a 10+ page thread, and this is the smartest thing that will be said.

No but I maintain rental properties in Metairie and Lakeview while owning a house in Houston. I'm not sure why you are laughing but anyone I know from NOLA would send a tourist anywhere besides Bourbon if they were asked but whatever, NOLA is trending downwards. Am I doing this right????

Lakeboy what are you talking about? No one is making a "mid-size southern city x is better than mid-size southern city y" argument. As it stands, New Orleans is the largest city in LA but only about the 45th (or so, not Googling it now) largest city in the US, and despite being on the Gulf Coast, Louisiana is lacking beaches. Even in those conditions New Orleans is among the top 5 (or so) tourist destinations in the US (currently). That being said, tourism is a fragile industry prone to social media influence and word of mouth, and NOLA's tourist reputation is entirely cultural - yes it is warm in the winter, but so are Texas and Florida. Visitors' percieve NOLA culture to be the FQ, maybe some of them do a few more searches and find Frenchman. Tourists are also the only people on Bourbon on Tuesday which is the night I am reporting about. I'm not from here, I don't give a frick about whatever historical NOLA vs. BR vs. Lafayette vs. whatever beef there is in this state - but as a taxpayer of this state (whose taxes are about to go up), I want NOLA and its tourism industry to succeed.

Yes, and the vast majority of tourists have locals telling them where to go.

And also, you live in Houston and have a place in lakeview...but you completely have a better handle on the French quarter than I do.

And FYI, you're doing it wrong. Since you asked.

my bad, i couldn't tell what you were implying. I thought that was weird too. But the answer to the OP's question is the homeless heroin stuff hasn't come close to hitting crisis mode to impact tourism. Not to say it isn't a problem, but it hasn't made a dent. It will take serious shite to stem the tide.

Yep, I'm doing it wrong. You're going to tell me about my life in NOLA, my move temporary move to Houston and the reasons I'm doing what I'm doing. You got me...

Then please explain why your rentals in lakeview and Metairie makes you an expert on the French quarter over me. Or even better, how my statements about the homeless problem in the FQ is limited to bourbon street as it relates to tourism.

It is and it always will, and the reason why is in your interrogatory. Its raw and edgy, people see stuff here they dont see at home in the suburbs.

You do know the church next door has a homeless service center, right?

Honestly, I get your point. New Orleans is a place unlike any other city in the country. It's special, and I love it.

But would that unique quality change if the streets weren't filled with homeless people and horse crap?
