How much does it really cost to go to LSU?

I'm always reading these ridiculous numbers for college costs. Assuming you're not a dumbass and get help from TOPS, what does a semester cost when you factor in on or off-campus housing, books, fees, food and living expenses, etc. - all in, what's it really cost?
I came out of dental school with around $20K in debt in the late '80s/early '90s, though my dad paid the first year (which was the most expensive at around $10K since it included the purchase of all your equipment). I always got a good laugh when I'd read how dentists come out of school $150K in debt or ridiculous numbers like that.

If you have tops and a job it's easy to come out ahead I would imagine.

My parents got a raise when I graduated high school and went to LSU.

I think the grand total for my 5 years of LSU was about $82k. Tops paid about 1/3 to 1/2 of it. The rest came out of my own pockets. Couldn't have done it without tops.

That's why you deal it and it's free.

Is heroine really that big in the drug scene nowadays? I have heard it's bad. But instead of people smoking weed and taking pills are youths now just shooting up?

Cost less than the private school I went to

LSU dental school right now is $150K. My son is still in undergrad but that's what he's working towards.

Cost more than the public schools went to.

And this is why Tech leads the way in ROI.

Short answer, yes. Real answer could take a whole thread.

I graduated in 2011. With tops tuition was about $800 a semester with all the fees or whatever. Add about $400-$500 a semester for books I guess. You figure out the rest for living expenses. That really depends on the person. LSU may not be the best university in the world, but at least I didn't have to get myself into absurd debt for my undergrad degree.

UNO tuition costs me $3750 for full-time this semester. Price goes up every semester around $250 though
Books and online homework websites usually cost around $1k/semester
I own my house, but when I was renting, it was between $350 and $1250/mo. Bills around $300/mo. Food like $500/mo
Booze varies depending on your lifestyle.
Total, I'd say each year was around $30-40k just going fall and spring

Ive been at LSU for 5 years and have kept a spread sheet of books, fees, and tuition the entire time because i am super strict on my budgeting.
To date i have spent almost 50,000 in 10 semesters. However about 35,000 was covered by TOPS and my honors scholarship. With the price increases due to the budget cuts, this year has cost me a little under 18000.
These numbers dont include my living expenses because I'd be paying those regardless.

I graduated debt free in '05. No Tops, no scholarship, no help from my parents.
It can be done (could have been done pre-Jindal). You just have to want it bad enough.
ETA: I paid around $2,500 or so each semester. I went to Summer school every year.
