I have friends from Houston that tell me LSU is roughly $38,000 all in (tuition, room, board, misc) per year for their kids to attend.

This old geezer salutes you . Now sell your motorcycle with haste because you want to meet your unborn kids some day and La drivers are functionally retarded.

Back in the day that was laughable. Now though, you are pretty fortunate if you come out of dental school with only 150k. If you cant make an instate school and have to go to the privates coming out with 300k+ debt is all but guaranteed.

Damn - just googled and saw that LSU Dental is $22,500/yr. now, and the average is $55K elsewhere. In the early '90s it was $3,500/yr. if I remember correctly.

TOPS doesnt cover tuition anymore. If the state let TOPS continue to balloon its coverage while cutting funding, thus hiking tuition then they would just be chasing their tails.

Like it has been mentioned, it is not an astronomical feat to go to school and work. If TOPS helps then a student would only have to work part time and they would still likely get out debt free.

There is nothing that aggravates me more than listening to some of my friends parents or my coworkers talk about how it is impossible to go to school and work full time. False. Its impossible to go to school, party, and work full time.

You would not believe the # of students i know who are in a fraternity that costs $5k a year, live in an apartment that cost $12k a year, attend school for ~12k a year, and drive $40k cars. Yet, these kids a) dont have a job and b) are the ones whose parents complain about the costs of college.

TL;DR: Most of the parents are the problem when it comes to immature, unprepared grads.

Exactly. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, $3,500 in 1990 has the same purchasing power as $6,300 in 2015. So in other words LSU dental tuition has increased nearly 3.5 times when comparing $22,500 vs $6,300

LSU needs to recruit more OOS students who have money. Take less in state people, they all have TOPS yet complain how much it costs. If the school needs money, start with OOS

You are correct. Parents never pay for the living expenses of children in college. As for books, I have been out of college for 10 years. I do not know they they run these days. It was just a guess. 250 va 500 per semester is only a 2k difference over 8 semesters

My parents didn't pay a dime of my college. I had to cover my cost of living, tuition, and books. I'm telling you it can be done for a reasonable amount with tops. I'm happy that I didn't have the parent windfall or I may have been a frick off in college. I spent my own money to do it and learned the value of money at an early age and I'm thankful for my parents for it.
