Every marriage that starts with an ultimatum is rock solid. Never ends in divorce. Guaranteed.

I outkicked my coverage. I didn't settle for a thing.

4 decades later she still looks good, and she puts up with me.

Let her walk. You've made your decision but she's using an ultimatum to force you to change yours to align with hers. Why? Because she doesn't care or respect what you want. And if you go through with it, you won't respect yourself either. No one should make that decision for you except you.

I dated a few girls who were drama queens, tried to control me life, or wanted to spend money as quick as I was earning it. I found a nice girl who is drama free, has a decent career and lets me do what the hell I want so I settled for her. Granted there have been other girls in the past who I was crazier about but my wife is free of all the emotional baggage and I'm content.

The bottom line is that getting married means that you are surrendering half of everything that you have

JFYI, the "community", or what is split in divorce is ONLY what is accumulated from the point it begins. You lose nothing that was yours before you married. All of your property, real estate, financial holdings, savings, etc. you had before remain yours. Just make sure you keep documents like your real estate closures, titles, etc. You can still prove everything with bank records, searching titles, etc. but it makes it easier if you already have records.

Just don’t refinance anything. Probably avoid using any property as security for a loan in general, as well.

After dating med students and law students I married a teacher. Looks wise, I didn't settle. At this point it would look like she settled.

I missed this part. Give her the boot, ultimatums are a huge red flag.

So I read this as ’I've always expressed that I'm committed but not committed enough to get 'married'.

My current SO and I have been together 3 years. Both have had previous marriage and I've always expressed that I'm committed but don't see a reason to get 'married'. Today I was given an ultimatum. Commitment by marriage or she's walking. I don't want to lose her but still stand by my belief.

More detail, was this we get married by date x, we get engaged and set a a date sometime this year, or we agree we’re going to get married at some point.

Is this something you have discussed previously and agreed that marriage was not the goal? If you’ve never discussed it, I suspect she thought that was the goal all along. If you have, has something recently happened that may have brought this on?

Because her options diminish with age. If you aren't willing to commit to her, then she has only so much time to find someone who will.

Lots of legal reasons to do it if, god forbid, one of you were in a serious accident or dies.
