I am fluent in French. It helps to start reading as soon as you can while you're learning. There are free public domain books you can download in other languages from Project Gutenberg

Reading Papillon right now to keep from getting rusty.

I think they are about the same but Duolingo is less boring. RS is BORING. Personally, I think they both suck at teaching the language. I do better picking up a workbook with explanations. I'm not a child, so stop teaching me like I'm a child. Give me conjugations and explanations and I'll thrive.

They teach you like a child Bc I think the theory is, you learned English like a child. You didn't really learn English in a classroom. That's what the commercials seemed to say.

I tried RS for Spanish. I found it boring too, and I learn best in a classroom setting. For me it was a great supplement to the classroom. The classroom gave me an understanding of the language, how it's organized etc. RS gave vocabulary and practice in applying it.

Some of my family does. I speak a little. Mostly I just make up crazy sounding french words to use as adjectives. My latest is "frahpain" (silent n). No idea what it means - just sounds cool.

Yeah, that's what I meant. I think it's their flaw. Adults don't learn like children. We're more able to understand the the rules of language rather than trial and error.

I like Duolingo because if you get it wrong you can see and ask questions why you were wrong. Someone will usually link a grammar sheet with explanations.

I just learn better that way.

I agree with you. RS was so boring it was hard to stick to it. After 15 mins my mind would wander.

Yeah, I bought RS for Italian and, it was helpful, but by Level 3 I was ready to gouge my eyes out. I then went to a bookstore, bought a Barron's Workbook, and started listening to podcasts and just read on the internet.

So can you speak any Italian? I never made it past level 1 on RS. Seems like at level 3 you could put a few sentences together.

I will say I'm pretty fluent in it. I can listen really well and, although it can take me a second to figure out what I want to say and how to say it correctly, I do it.

In my opinion, it's the language that makes the most sense to me, especially when it's written.

I quit RS because it was holding me back. I only use Duolingo to kill time and keep my skills sharp.

I would think Italian and Spanish are the most simple. French seems a bit more difficult with the pronunciations and silent letters.

I'm learning French now on duolingo and some conjugation apps and it has been rather difficult for me. It's such a subtle language. It's beautiful, but tough.

That's impressive that you essentially taught yourself a foreign language. I lack the dedication. With limited free time I'd have to give up reading books or watching movies. Really impressive.

Well, my father speaks multiple languages so I guess I just have a natural affinity for them.

Each morning I do a few lessons on Duolingo, read some online news, and will do practice tests in a workbook. It helps, but I'm sure if you threw me in Italy I would be humbled rather quickly.

Quanti anni sei stato fluente? Mi manca parlare la lingua regolarmente. Ho abitato a Bologna per un anno e a Firenze per seis mesi. Ero quasi fluente mentre ero alli.

Peut être... Mais il faut quand même pas prétendre d'être le Français savant.

C'est vraiment dommage qu'il y a tellement de gens qui perde leur langue natale. Il faut faire l'effort pour le pratiquer.

Btw... What helped me out the most and the quickest was french children's programming when I was living there. Dora l'exploratrice is awesome for learning the language or brushing up to keep au courant.
