How many oceans are there?

Growing up, we were taught there were 4 oceans:
Atlantic
Pacific
Indian
Arctic
Now I recently found out there are officially 5? As in, there is such a thing as the Southern Ocean?
Literally no map I own has the Sourthern/Antarctic Ocean depicted, for that matter. Have I just been in the dark? I feel like they’ve done a poor job of getting the word out, if so. I mean, I think everyone knows Pluto was officially down graded. But the Southern Ocean?

1 ocean
quote:
Historically, there are four named oceans: the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic. However, most countries - including the United States - now recognize the Southern (Antarctic) as the fifth ocean. The Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian are known as the three major oceans

When were those printed? Google Maps shows the Southern Ocean FWIW.

Southern Ocean

The ocean is continuous. It is not divided (like the continents).
Therefore, there should only be one.
Therefore, there should only be one.

Kelsey’s woods, Kelsey’s ocean

Based on a quick search, the IHO declared 5 in 2002. But interestingly the National Geographic Society is sticking with 4. I think all of my big ones are NGS.

“Many people use the terms "ocean" and "sea" interchangeably when speaking about the ocean, but there is a difference between the two terms when speaking of geography (the study of the Earth's surface). Seas are smaller than oceans and are usually located where the land and ocean meet.”
Oceans by size:
Pacific (168,723,000 sq km)
Atlantic (85,133,000 sq km)
Indian (70,560,000 sq km)
Southern (21,960,000 sq km)
Arctic (15,558,000 sq km)

I think we’re all on board with this, logically. But apparently the currents, etc. make the division a pretty heated topic.

Crazy. First I've ever heard of this.

Don't forget the Aletta Ocean.

It may be stupid, but it is closing on 20 years old as an idea.
