I live in Houston. Have lived in NOLA. There's a reason I'm in Houston.
Better schools. Better job market. Same cost of living. Food scene isn't as concentrated as NOLA's, but it's every bit as good. Just have to drive to get to the places you want to go. Better places to live for families and for young professionals. A government that works. A decent infrastructure.
The only thing I liked better about NOLA was the 3 martini lunches that people can still get away with there. Not a big festival guy. Don't like being 3 feet from a potential murder every time I step out my office. NOLA has its perks, but I'd take Houston every time.
I'd also leave Houston in a heartbeat for the right opportunity. It's not the ideal place to live. It's just that NOLA is worse in pretty much every way.

Yup. All of that
A lot of people here also like to conflate thinking Houston is a better place to live than New Orleans to thinking Houston is some sort of utopia. New Orleans isn't some terribly high bar to clear in that regard unless you're made of money.
I'm here because it did, and still does, make sense for me professionally. I'll just as quickly be gone from here if I can find a job that provides similar compensation and professional contentedness that my current one does in places like Jackson/SLC, off the I-70 corridor, etc.

Look at my reply. I called it. Most people in this thread are comparing suburb to houston. Everyone knows the suburbs in NOLA are terrible. Worst of both worlds.
Would you say the same comparing garden district living to anywhere in Houston? That's where I live... I'm a block off magazine and there is nothing in houston comparable to my lifestyle my guy. Comparing kenner to nice neighborhoods in houston is stupid
Yes. The garden district pretty much blows. Even the nicest area is really close to a bad area. And you still have to drive thru the rest of Nola which is predominantly a fricking blight of a society with every other house looking like it's abandoned.
Compare the garden district to rice village and the village wins in every single catagory other than being close to festivals like jazz fest that are filled with trashy people of every race.
But let's do this, since the garden district is the nicest in Nola, let's compare it west university or River oaks in Houston or highland Park/university park in Dallas and tell me in what way the garden district is better in any way.
Only things better in Nola proximity to fishing and hunting and LSU. The food isn't better in NOLA if you compare it as a whole. Are certain cuisines better? Sure but as a whole NOLA lacks in variety to the larger cities. Compared to cities it's size, sure it's better but not compared to the larger cities especially Houston.
And laughable people think the North shore even compares to the burbs in the Houston or Dallas areas. It saddens me that people really think it's comparable.
I get staying because of friends and family. I am still in the LC area only because of family. But until people can admit pretty much all of Louisiana is a shite hole with only small pockets of good not great areas then we can't move forward to improve the state.
Garden district, pockets of uptown and old met are the only areas worth a shite in the Nola area. The area as a whole is filled with low income trashy arse people due to limited economic growth and opportunities.
In BR, the St George area, praireville, and small pockets in other places are the only areas worth a shite. Again the area is filled with low income people due to shitty policies.
In laffy, you have south of the interstate where there are pockets that are good.
In lake Charles, you have moss bluff and SLC essentially with only small pockets in other areas.
Houma/thib area is essentially the same as Laffy and lc, small sections that are nice.
Every single other place in South LA is almost entirely filled with low income trashy people with limited economic opportunity to better themselves. The housing and business environment reflects this. So does the housing and businesses in the cities I mentioned.
From an economic standpoint NOLA lags behind big time compared to it's peers and Houston is not it's peer.
I live a great life in South LA and make a damn good living. But I don't try and lie to myself and act like it's something it's not and y'all shouldn't either.
Once we can admit about 90% of the state is a shite hole, we can get everyone on board to fix it. The state has a ton of potential, but you can vote politicians in like Edwards, the mayors of BR/Nola and expect to take steps forward.

Basically y'all just hate NOLA. Could've skipped the whole wall of txt.

Not really. I think it could be an amazing city. But the article posted a page or so back hit the nail on the head. People there are fine with it the way it is and that means it still has no future.
It is filled with mostly uneducated, low income people of every race who are perfectly fine just surviving. I don't like being around that as much as possible.
Other than the people aka culture, the food and the sports there is not one redeeming quality of Nola compared to Houston/Dallas. It really isn't a fair comparison to begin with people insist on making it.
Can you answer any of my comments or refute any of them in the "Wall of Text"???

You don't seem overly intelligent or open-minded.

You basically said the only reason to prefer Nola is the people, culture, food, and sports. Umm... Thats a lot of things. I also have zero interest in suburbs or suburban living. Probably the reason for our differences right there.

I said people only if you have to be around family. Most, I would say upwards of 80% of those in Nola are uneducated, low income trash.
Food...only french/creole and Italian are better. Nola food scene is not as good as Houston imo overall.
Sports...yea you are much closer and it's much easier to go to LSU games. But if you don't attend those or saints game it's a complete wash.
How old are you and do you have kids?

If you hate 80 percent of the people in New Orleans I think I pretty much have you pegged. Enjoy the burbs my dude.
