I've got one en route. She'll be here in a couple weeks.

Where in the Bible does it speak of Godparents? Or is this another made up idea by the Catholics?

That is the case with me also. My nieces and nephews all live in other cities and I never see them, so I don't get them birthday or Christmas presents. I spoil my godchildren. I lucked into my nieces and nephews but I was chosen to be a godfather, so I feel closer to my godchildren.

I think you as the godparent are to encourage the child to explore their faith. Lead by example. Also, if the parents kick the bucket in a horrible wood chipper accident or something, the church makes it your responsibility to see to the faith portion of the kid's life.
OP this is the correct answer. Being a godparent is fun. I am closer to my godparents than I am my other aunts and uncles. Maybe because they had different names (Nanny and Parrain) or maybe they took the time to imprint themselves on to me.
ETA: I have 2 godchildren, and they are both girls.

If the parents are bringing the child to church on a regular basis then there's not much you have to do in regards to their faith.
When my godchild was younger I would give her a birthday card and small gift on her "baptism birthday."

Be the cool godparent. Get the kid a dirt bike or a drum set for his birthday

I had been a godfather for 5 years before learning this was a thing. I might need to start doing it.

Godfather of 2. I give them gifts for Christmas and birthday. I am not really Catholic. Just I am on paper

I am Catholic but it sucks we don't have a pope right now. The Holy See is vacant as far as I am concerned.

A godparents duty is to complete the religious formation and indoctrination of a child in the absence of the parents.

According the Church you do... A lot of people don't follow it today, but these are the church requirements for both and it applies to both. You only need to have one though. If you have two, one must be male and the other female. (a) be Catholic (b) have been baptized, confirmed and receive Communion (c) be 16 or older (although there may be exceptions to this rule at the discretion of the bishop) (d) must be living a life consistent with their own baptismal vows.
welp, I don't qualify...

According to the church, both have to be. For some reason people think as long as they do one Catholic, the other one can be whatever. Church rules say you only need one godparent, but if you have two, they both must meet the same criteria. You can have a witness that is a baptized non catholic representative.
they let my godchilds nanny be a "Christian witness". I thought it was only one that had to be cat-lic.
didn't learn till after that technically the church shouldn't have let me be a parran

Other denominations besides Catholic have godparents. I'm Lutheran. The only requirement our pastor had was that the godparents be "Christians who believe in infant baptism."

I talked to a few people who are STRICT catholics after, me and the wife aren't married in the catholic church, shes not catholic, our kid isn't, plus the church frowns on freemasonry and other things....
all of these things can be changed though with a donation to the church and getting remarried and her converting though

Two, a 3 year old which is actually my great niece, and a 7 month old which is my best friends son.

I have three. 2, 4, and 7 years of age.
I do nothing different. We are a good uncle and aunt. That is it.

I've got 9. Yes, 9.
Frankly, it's too many. It's hard to tell people no when they ask you to be the Godfather.
I was better at it when I was younger and only had a few. It's tricky now with the older ones, some of whom don't seem to be practicing their religion even if they still believe, which they might not. It makes me feel a bit like a failure.
I just try to love them and remind them that God loves them too, and is always looking for them to come back into a relationship with Him. The Christmas gifts will always include some religious theme or item.
This year, I gave my 3 oldest Godchildren (in their 20's-30's) nice coffee/tea mugs with a short and uplifting bible verse on the side. The Protestant book/gift shops have more of that type of stuff than the Catholic bookstores.
