And begin a return to normalcy?

Let's assume for the sake of this thread, that, with additional testing, confirmed infection rates spike drastically without a correlating spike in hospitalizations and death. How long will it take to reach medical/scientific conclusions such that returning to a more normal state becomes recommended?

2 weeks, 4 weeks, 8 weeks?

We will never know if actions today are overblown or not. If the numbers don't skyrocket, everyone will claim we overreacted and the government will claim it was because of their actions.

The two sides will forever stake their claim to their side and neither will ever be proven.

I mean just off the cuff I’d say 2 more weeks. By then it’s no doubt been documented in the country past the incubation period which would show what sort of infection/hospitalization rate to expect. I ain’t no doctor and haven’t put a ton of thought in to it.

In two weeks that’d be about 3.50 weeks baw. Oh shite!! The meaning of tree fiddy baws!

No way to know if actions are overblown. The only thing we will ever know is if we didn’t do enough.

The media will continue hyping up the spread of the virus while downplaying the mortality rate, which will drop like a stone.

14 days from Saturday (last Saturday before a lot of states shut everything down) would give the virus enough time to spread and create symptoms in those infected. So let's say March 28th.

By then, we'll know if this is far less serious than reported.

trump need to quarantine everyone for a month and then give every citizen $1k.

it's our only hope to get ahead of this. we are going to be spinning in circles with this half half banning shite. trump is already tanking stocks with fake news. this is his only option for redemption

it’s also 14 days into severely limited travel, events, social distancing, etc

There’s no way to tell

Actions are currently overblown, as they should be

There's really no other way to try to prevent the spread than to be overly cautious

No one will ever publicly say the reaction was overblown. Statements will be like:

With the information we had at the time we felt the actions were correct.

It is unknown how many lives were saved abd given the same scenario we would do the same.

Our actions were part of the reason so many were not infected. (This ignores what flattening the curve means)

I don't think this is going away anytime soon.

You have a highly contagious virus of which there is no known immunity or vaccine. You have limited ability to test for the virus (Will improve, but the horse is already out of the barn). You have some unknown number of carriers of the virus who are completely asymptomatic. This isn't going away in a few weeks.

The 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic basically travelled around the world three times. The second wave was worse than the first in the US. Obviously, we've made major medical advances in the past hundred years, but anyone who isn't taking this seriously is deluding themselves. Yes, the people panic shopping for toilet paper are stupid, but this virus is the real deal.

Not true. This social distancing and cancellation travel, events, etc., is supposed to slow down the spread, to prevent overwhelming our healthcare system. The "curve" you hear so much about. It is not intended to prevent it from spreading completely.

If there are millions of cases spread over months, and the healthcare system is not overwhelmed, then the fear mongers can claim victory.

If there is a low number of cases, over ANY timeline, then this was nothing and the naysayers were right.
