Losses of 1.32B on 10,000 units is pretty mind blowing and now their dealers who spent up to $1.2M for upgrades are suing them.
Ford can’t be the only mfg bleeding money on these unicorns can they?
...Ford reported in April the division lost $1.32 billion on 10,000 vehicles wholesaled from January through March. While the unit also includes EV-related business such as software, those losses equate to a loss of $132,000 for each vehicle the unit sells....

there was almost always going to be massive losses upfront.
and unless federal regulations planned to go into effect in future get changed, mfgs didn’t have a choice but to swallow them and pray they eventually start treading water at least.

As long as fed govt and taxpayers cover their losses
Similar to the Ukraine war we’ve been bankrolling

Hand full of lith companies and a bunch of folks in SW Arkansas are hoping all the auto manufacturers stay in the EV game. Lot at stake in that area.

Ford hybrid vehicles continues to accelerate, with U.S. sales reaching 17,997 in April, a 60 percent improvement from the same month a year ago and a new monthly record

The losses are so large due to the investments they have made to support much higher production.
I don't know what Ford's break even volume is, but GM's isn't terribly high as I recall. It's not like they have to be moving Tesla's volume to be profitable. The market and infrastructure just isn't there yet.
*I'm glad GM has rolled back it's EV plans. Barra was insane to push for an all EV GM in ten or so years. They're actually designing the next gen V8.

I have no experience with electric vehicles, but we have some hybrid pickups in the fleet at work and they work pretty damn good!

Sounds good, but misleading. can you even get a F-150 with a V8 engine anymore, or are they V6 hybrids? Hybrids are not gaining traction organically, they’re just the most powerful engines available in the most popular model of Ford Vehicles

That's what starting a new BU looks like for a big company that has to have scale out of the gates. It's why big companies so very seldom do it. They're in it to stay, and the losses now will pay back later.
For as close a direct comparison as you will get, the CDW-27 Mondeo/Contour/Mystique of the 1990's was an all new engine, transmission, and body plus a couple of plants. That is rare for any global OEM to do all three at once, and that is as close as you will get to the launch cost of a dedicated EV platform. That was around $4B in 1990's dollars. It became the best-selling car on the planet for several years, something like >400-500k per year. EVs have a ways to go, but their sales rates are increasing.
The upfront cost in EVs to date is smaller, even with greatly inflated dollars. People don't understand that the spreadsheets for all-new engine or transmission launches round off at the $10M decimal point. That's just the way the industry is.

Yes, you can get a 5.0 F150, though they all have auto start/stop. That is technically a mild hybrid, but they don't count it in "hybrid sales". Hybrids have been forced somewhat, but look at the Maverick - the original BASE engine was the hybrid. The voluntary take rate was so high that Ford made it a $1,500 option to slow it down because they didn't have enough capacity. And it still sold out within days of the order books opening.

Ford could choose to make good EV’s. They choose not to.

Wonder how much of the billion or so they spent on this is assigned to the EV side;
You may remember it from one of the Transformers movies;
It's the old Michigan Central terminal that lay abandoned for decades.

Long enough for Ford of Mandeville to just recently finish installation of three power boxes for the vehicles in front of the store.
