The people I see care the most aren’t people from New Orleans. They’re from out of state, married into it, and are diving head first into it. The people that grew up with it seem to see it for what it is and enjoy it without the pretension.

Oh and old ladies who like to boss around the help. These balls are like tickets to Augusta to them.

Dude go read a census article. The majority of people moving to Nola ARE from Louisiana. Largest being from Baton Rouge.

Nola article

Seems like the children of many of these types attend college out of state and end up staying there or elsewhere other than Nola.

Plenty of these organizations have out of town members. The offspring may move away, but they'll come back for Mardi Gras. And some offspring eventually come back for good after living elsewhere.

such a move shouldn't register much if it's just along I-10... It is Atlanta, NYC, and Houston people moving here from elsewhere

Great post. There is a great book called "Lords of Misrule" that covers some of this. I've met many Rex and Comus members and they are insufferable. Their "old money" doesn't mean shite in any other major city or state. But they don't care, they are content lording their status over the plebes and reveling in their narcissism. The old-line contempt for outsiders and new ideas sunk the city just as surely as the corrupt politicians who took over city hall and gutted it out. Really, both crowds deserve each other=. The rest of us left for greener pastures in Texas and Florida.

They're not as insular as they used to be. But what you mentioned is one reason a lot of the best and brightest left (DeBakey for example, and a lot of dynamic young business leaders more recently.)

Everyone that I’ve ever met who is involved with these organizations is very conservative FWIW.

Yes and no. They might be social conservatives by nature, but many are big supporters of local and statewide democrats. All you need to do is look at the list of people who hold big fundraisers at their houses. Its a few rich black folks like the Woods, but many are old white families who are deep in carnival society.

LOL this is what Mardi Gras is based off of. Don't participate if you don't enjoy it. It's a blast if you don't take it too seriously!

Total $hit parade but I think it was more about the organization and the balls. Prob eyes wide shut parties etc. But I do applaud them for saying FU we aint segregating.

From an economic perspective, it's got to be the petro-chemical industry. Very little of that is being "run" from New Orleans. Of course very little of it is being "run" from anywhere in the state anymore. New Orleans "runs" very little economically anymore.

No, no one in Comus would ever discuss whether they have black members or not. They could be 80% black for all you know.

Dude I'm telling you, these clubs are filled with conservatives, NOT liberals. You might have a few liberals scattered, but it's by and large conservatives. The uptown liberal crowd is not involved in this stuff, I guarantee it. I am a big Mardi Gras history buff and I know quite a few affiliated.
