How long does it take for me to develop a southern accent?

Or how much? Either way… just doesn’t seem natural. Amirite?

Apparently all you have to do is drive by Tiger Stadium and speak the words and you’ll have one.

Pretty much depends on how old you are when exposed to it is how I think.
I had a brother-in-law, now deceased, who was born in Chalmette and lived there for his first 5 years. He was just a young kid when his parents divorced and he was the only one his mom took with her when she moved to rural Arkansas and then eventually to rural Georgia.
He was one of 7 kids and the only one exposed daily to that heavy southern drawl and as an adult he sounded like he was born in a hay stack, slopped hogs and tended to the chickens before a breakfast of grits and hog jowls. The rest of his siblings all talk with the typical N.O. or "Yat" accent.

must be pretty easy since every yankee Nascar driver (unfortunately there are alot of em now) have all cultivated southern accents: Brad Keslowski, Kevin Harvick, joey logano, etc etc

It doesn’t take long.
I grew up in Livingston Parish, moved to Houston and was able to shake it, but anytime I go back to visit I pick it back up for awhile. It’s a virus.

If you're Oliver Anthony, then you're able to sing with an accent and talk without one.

Um, Harvick is from Bakersfield. He is definitely not a Yankee.

Anybody can fake an accent. I think the OP was talking about developing a true southern accent that is not put on. Actors do it all the time for roles they play in film.
Look at "Larry the Cable Guy" who toured with Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall and Ron White in their "Blue Collar" comedy show for years. Away from the stage and just being himself, his drawl is nowhere near what it is on stage. it's all a prop to make his sound more like a dumb redneck.

But you said Harvick was a Yankee.
He's not. He's from California. You were wrong.

Unless your spouse has one, you probably won't. There's so much media now that people hear neutral accents way more than their regional ones
Accent is nearly dead among the younger generation in the suburbs.

A lot of country singers are that way. Same deal with Brit singers, can't tell they're Brits until they speak.....singing not so much.

One of my older cousins moved to Lockport back in the late 60's as an adult, met a gal there and got married.
He was born and raised in Arabi until his early 20's before making that move.
After about 2 years being married to that bayou gal, he was speaking Cajun French and sounded like he fished and trapped along the bayous of La. his whole life.
I couldn't believe the transformation he made in that short of a time-----as an adult no less.

this a really weird shot out of the blue that barely makes sense to be brought up in this thread. me thinks you have an axe to grind.

Do Cajun accents sound like country accents to Yankees?

Honestly just listen to straight country music / southern talk radio and it will happen naturally in like a year or 2

Any place that isn’t the south is Yankee.
