Uber and lyft are really similar. I've used both and couldn't tell you the difference.

I think Lyft has the better future.
Their strategy for autonomous vehicles is to allow any AV car company to use their platform for ride hailing
Uber will operate within a closed environment using only the cars they design/build
This gives Lyft the advantage of increasing their AV "fleet" at minimal cost while also collaborating on best practices.

Thanks for an informed response.
It's perplexing to me why so many people got so triggered by my initial post.

for one so drivers can log more hours. I've had a few say how they limit the amount of time you can drive so they will drive for one for a few hours, switch it off and clock in to the other.

Merger is a tough question. They are both large enough now for the FTC to care. However their whole cloak is based on them being in the “ride sharing” business and not the “for hire transportation” business. The “for hire” business has a bunch of regulations in every state that neither company wants to be a part of.
SiriusXM is the closest comparison (combined 100% of the satellite radio market pre-merger). However when the merger was reviewed for anti-trust purposes they lobbied to part of the entertainment market, with no defined “satellite radio market”. If you consider the entertainment market as a whole, Sirius and XM we’re both minor players, therefore their merger was inconsequential.
Lyft and Uber can merge, but they have to admit that they actually share a “for hire” market with cabs, limos, buses....opening up a path to requiring advanced licenses for its drivers.

I would suggest they are agencies for drivers more than specific products for consumers.

I think it's a tough business to turn a profit in at prices people want to pay. For a 15 mile ride that takes, say 30 minutes, using the IRS deduction rate of $.58 per mile, that's $8.7 to cover the cost of the car. Then the driver needs $20 for his time. That's $28.70; and I think cost of than Uber or Lyft is about $30. That doesn't leave much for Uber/Lfyt to scrape.
They probably need to raise prices; but if one raises prices, all of the business will go to the one that doesn't. There is basically no product differentiation except if it was on price.
Airlines have some product differentiation beyond price; and they've done a lot of combinations themselves. They would probably do more but they can't as long as the FTC and Justice Department enforce the Sherman Anti Trust Act.
They would probably let Lyft and Uber merge, however...they wouldn't have a monopoly in the ground transportation space.
I highly respect Uber/Lyft for the benefits they've brought to society. It's unfortunate the economics are tough.

I think this will be the most likely outcome.

Nope

I get your point.
But for 99% of the flying public there is no discernible difference.
They get a coach seat. They fly to a destination. That most major carriers fly to.
Uber and Lyft differentiate as well. Lyft only has two classes of rides, at least that is what I see when I use the app. Uber has more.

All basically the same for the coach flying public.
But, fine. Tell me why a mall had foot locker, champs, athletes foot, etc. All selling the same kicks.

And they aren’t the same.
