I still fail to see how getting rid of a flag will change the future outcome of racial tension. I think people who think this are a little on the stupid side...

I wonder what the % is of people that support the confederate flag is actually due to southern pride vs. just being racist.

Can the Federal Gov mandate a state flag be changed? If not, I do not believe the great state of Mississippi, their legislature and their people will ever change it.

They can't mandate it but they could cut some federal funding. Is this flag that has a rich history of 15 years really worth that?

5 Southern States that have some sort of Confederate meaning in their state flag.

Mississippi, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia and Florida.

Florida will cave to the pressure. I am pretty sure Alabama will tell them to frick off. Not sure about the 3.

I think this whole argument is just silly. People want to take down the confederate flag for the wrong reasons. What the hell will change after its gone? Idiots all over my Facebook think that by ridding of the flag, racial tension will die down and in turn we will have a more peaceful society. I don't get people. Probably never will.

There has always been debates over the confederate flag though. I think the recent shooting just brought things to the forefront with it.

I agree....it's not gonna magically make racial tension better. But you can't say that flag isn't highly offensive to some people. I think people get silly with what they deem offensive in regards to anything Confederate related(ex: saying a plantation home is highly offensive seems a stretch to me). But to have a flag like that actually flying over a state capital, in 2015, or for it to actually still be part of a state flag, I mean cmon...it doesn't necessarily look good and most would agree.

You bring up pretty good points. I don't have a problem personally if it stays up or gets taken down since I am indifferent on the issue. However, as I've stated earlier, I think it's not going to change much if it is taken down. Maybe I'm just not an overly sensitive person, but I just think it's kind of ridiculous to take something down because a select few people are unhappy with it.

Honestly, the best alternative would just be to leave the flags/other objects that offend people in some sort of secluded museum so they won't have to worry about being offended by having the flag hanging on tax payer land. At the end of the day, people are too damn sensitive, and I think that's a huge problem with our society, especially my fricking generation.

Really, that flag represents all the people of Mississippi? I think not. Bravery of those who fought for "their" country; not the USA. Bravery for keeping slaves as free labor, abuse of slaves aka human beings. I could go on, but you are all aware of what those flags symbolize.

Those flags are an embarrassment to America. They're all coming down. Oh one more thing. We're told to move on from racism, these type of racist situations because it's in the past. Well all these rebel flag loving folks should move on because it's all in the past in a war that the South lost. LOST. Put them in a museum, wave them when you have those re-enactments, paint your homes to resemble those flags but they never should have been on any type of local/state gov't property. We are the United States of America not the CSA.

I think a slight change will void it being the confederate flag. Will look the same unless you have a keen eye. Bitch all you want then, it's not a confederate flag.

I agree. You have the right to display that flag if you want in your own home or wear it on clothing if you so desire or whatever. I'm not saying ban it everywhere. But it shouldn't still be used to represent state and local government.

So explain to me how this is going to make these rebel folks move on? If anything, it'll spawn even more hatred out of these idiots and worsen the racial tension in our society.

Honestly, this is so true. Our society is unfortunately so politically correct nowadays that you can't say anything without offending someone. People need to grow a damn backbone and just live, damnit. I hate the way our society is headed.

I never own or fly the rebel flag, but the issue I have is that black people are encouraged to show their African culture although they may have never been to Africa. I have seen many African emblems, artwork, and other things in the homes and displayed on the bodies of black people in memory if thier culture and that's fine, so why do southern states have to forget and never mention theirs? The kid who killed those people does not represent the south, he is just an evil, deranged murderer. It's enough already.
