One of the highest performing malls in the country at one time. No real competition for a metro area of this size.

Like I said on a previous post, they constantly renovate which keeps the place fun and enjoyable to shop
I think this is part of it. Unlike many other malls, I don’t feel like I am stepping back into 1980 when I go to Lakeside

What about Southland Mall in Houma?
Pretty safe for a mall, just about half empty now a days in stores and foot traffic. The old Sears wing is pretty depressing though. I can remember the glory days when it was pretty much full, and there was a movie theatre, a bank, A&G cafeteria, K&B drug store, and more down that wing. That movie theater, I believe, had a 600 seat auditorium, and was at the time the largest movie theater in Louisiana. Nostalgia for you, the premier of Nutriaman or Terror in the Swamp was shown in that auditorium.
Now the Houma-Terrebonne Soccer Association is leasing space behind the mall to add soccer fields. That hopefully will drive traffic to the mall to keep it from having the same thing that happened to Northshore square mall.
The only thing that I found unorthodox about Southland was that it lacked a central food court. They had restaurants scattered all over the mall. One of them was Lion Share which was a table service restaurant right in the middle between Dillards and Penneys that restaurant eventually moved out of the mall and then closed a few years later. I always wanted to eat there, but didn’t. Spencer’s now occupies the space, I believe. And they also have a fatty’s dream, Corn Dog 7.
Dead Mall tour guide Sal, might want to stop by this one if he hasn’t done so already. To get it while there is at least decent occupancy. Then if it ever shutters he has something to look back on.
If I recall correctly, since I was born in 1981, it started out as a single corridor with Sears, Woolworths, and a DH Holmes in 1969. Then the JC Penney wing was added after it opened during the 1970’s. DH Holmes then became Dillards when it was purchased Holmes. Woolworths, closed in the 1990’s when Woolworths shuttered it’s discount store division and the space sat vacant until American Eagle popped up in a small section of the retailer in the late 1990’s. Then Aeropostale opened in a second section of Woolworths in the 2000’s. The final remaining portion of the Woolworths location became a Shoe Department Store.
Sears shuttered in 2016, and the space has been vacant ever since, except for opening as. Spirit Halloween store one year. An out parcel that Sears used as its Outdoors and Tools store section was turned into a training academy. Sears actually predated the mall opening in 1966.
Around the time Sears announced that it was closing, the mall began a major renovation and moved several stores near the main entrance to make way for an H&M. H&M closed in 2020 or 2021.
K&B Drugs became a Rite Aid once that New Orleans based chain sold to Rite Aid. Once Rite Aid sold portions of its stores to Walgreens, the mall location was closed since a Walgreens was built across the street from the mall in the 2000’s.
What started out as an A&G cafeteria became a Cucos Mexican restaurant in the 1990’s and eventually closed in the 2000’s and has sat empty since. Now the mall is opening up a Red Seal Pizzeria in the space. I don’t know if it opened yet since it announced right before Hurricane Ida.

How is Lakeside Mall always packed?
It is literally the best-placed Mall in the entire state of Louisiana.
In the middle of Metairie, close to New Orleans, and everyone on the Northshore that works or goes to school in New Orleans passes it twice a day.
