I actually question the date on that.

Look at the diversity...

Probably because it reduces the likelihood that you get shredded by window glass as a result of the explosion.

Those are specially bomb-blast resistant school desks manufactured to exceedingly detailed specifications in the state prison.

Actually, from the testing that was done showed that the biggest danger was being killed by falling debris from the damaged buildings. Some people would say then why don’t they just evacuate the building and go outside (like during an earthquake). If you go outside you would be instantly incinerated by the thermal flash from a nuclear blast. I guess they figured that outside would be instant death. Inside, underneath the sturdiest object available would at least provide some chance , however small, of survival.

Yeah that radiation thing though! If you are in range for your desk to protect you while glass is flying then you will die or have kids with eight toes.

If a bomb detonates over downtown BR people there are SOL. If you're around Corporate Blvd finding a little cover may give you a chance at survival, maybe. If you're in Zachary or Prairieville being indoors away from windows means you survive unscathed while your neigbor caught in the open suffers flash burns or is injured by flying debris.

TL;DR. It wouldn't help at ground zero. It might depending how far away you are.

So they are free from radiation?

You don't think it would work? I suspect it works a lot better than "Take Your Shirt Off And Pump Your Fist At The Blast."

How about not scarring your kids!

Not free, but being shielded protects you from radiation too. The more the better. Being inside a substantial brick or concrete building will protect you from most of it. Being indoors will also protect you from fallout, most of which dissipates within the first hour. Not to say you wouldnt suffer some effects, either now or later. But being under some kind of cover may be the difference between immediate death/horrific injury and surviving. It at least gives you a chance.

The duck and cover thing was a little before my time but I was a kid during the latter part of the cold war. I didn't lie awake thinking about it and I doubt any of my friends did. Children are pretty damn adaptable.

Kids wouldn't have know or given a shite if the adults were not dumb asses and made this drill, they made their kids scared on purpose.

We had fire drills and tornado drills. I don't recall being scared about them, either. I wonder what kids now think about active shooter drills.

Really you want to go there and make it a comparison?

They're both events that could happen but are statistically unlikely.
