But you're right, it did get too busy.

Myspace should've thrived, too.

I’ve wondered the same thing. I remember when Facebook went public years ago and I thought at the time it was a big mistake because websites like Facebook never last. They come and go like Myspace.

Yet it’s still going strong...

Its downfall was creativity.

It allowed you to modify and design almost every aspect of your page from font to background.

The result was everyone's pages being unique and different and exciting.

The problem with that is collectively we don't want uniqueness or change. People are inherently, genetically, and instinctually adverse to change. So when you would scroll through myspace and get 30 different pages for 30 different people your brain would naturally shut you out. Too much stimulus and too much change. You also had to actually attempt to follow people or catch up with them. There wasnt a "newsfeed".

Facebook on the other hand is built as a super simplistic interface with 0 user-controlled changes and streamlined content. It's made to appease the collective mind. "A person is smart. People are dumb." is a brilliant quote and it explains facebook. "People dont actually want rights. They just want to feel like they have rights."

Facebook also benefited from the snoball effect that harms alot of invention in the modern technological age. People don't want options or multiple avenues for the same thing. As Facebook gathered more users, it reaches a critical mass where other sites became unnecessary. If 30 of your friends are on facebook and 8 of your friends are on myspace eventually you'll just use facebook and those 8 can catch up or be forgotten. No one is going to use and keep up with multiple social media platforms. Now, facebook will integrate your twitter, facebook, and instagram feeds into your facebook newsfeed, thus ensuring that one of those platforms wont kill it.

Rather than have to search anything or put forth any effort, facebook will categorize and streamline opinions directly too you, sometimes without you even searching for them. And you can scroll though profiles for hours without every noticing a difference in them which allows your brain to "surf" facebook without the instinctual resistance. Couple that with facebook's strong content control, data mining, targeted advertising, and origins as a small cultish college only social app, and you get the satanic juggernaut helping to usher in the apocalypse.
