How has Facebook survived as long as it has?

What has made Facebook a permanent fixture in the world today. Why couldn’t websites like Hi5 and Myspace last as long? He’ll most social media sites/apps come and go but what did Facebook figure out?
I don’t have Facebook anymore, haven’t for awhile, but I’m just surprised most people in my circle still do. Besides the narcissism, that isn’t necessarily exclusive to Facebook, what is the definite reason for surviving?

Data collection has made zuck the cuck a ton of money so he can afford to update the site and add features, get more data, sell, repeat over and over.

It’s very simple, and easy to navigate. It’s reconnected people that people haven’t seen in years. It connects family and friends scattered all over the country, and is a way of getting together to plan things, sell things, announce things, etc, etc.

My Facebook feed has turned into nothing but ads, stay-at-Home-mom-pushing-oils-or-weightloss-products, and poorly conceived liberal “gotcha” videos.

Yep. The Myspace Tom dude knew he was done, sold out, and is living the life now. Facebook was about to crush him and did after he sold.

It’s not the answer. Narcissism isn’t exclusive to Facebook and I’m not talking about social media in general, I’m specifically talking Facebook.

It’s hard for me to remember but was one of the downfalls for Myspace was that it really wasn’t adult friendly?

Every facebook page looks the exact same, no creativity, no uniqueness, just the same shite. It makes it easier to scroll and accept and just waste time endlessly. You couple that with content control, targeted advertising, and a little bit of luck and you get the devil's playhouse that is Facebook.
Look at Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
Content control and Uniformity masquerading as freedom and uniqueness shrouded in a blanket of faux-shared identity.

Facebook was initially successful due to the exclusivity, and very clean/simple interface. As shown in the movie The Social Network, you wanted to be on it because your friends were on it. It was very useful for college connections. MySpace was cluttered and allowed anyone to join.
This implanted it into that generation. People are reluctant to change.
The current FaceBook thrives on corporate advertising and data collection. The “newsfeed” is no longer a natural flowing timeline. It is a paid and bought advertising feed, with the posts only being ordered by ad money or data collected. The Chive actually wrote a good article on Organic Reach and how FB wants to control everything you see on the internet.
The younger generation actually does not utilize Facebook. Instagram, Twitter, SnapChat, and YouTube are far more popular to the youth. They view Facebook as “old people” and want little to do with it.

That’s actually a great point, uniformity and control. If we look at myspace they started with having to look at poeple’s pages for updates or whatever, then they moved to a centralized status update, like twitter uses now. But there was never a “news feed” or a central location to get updates from everyone just by scrolling.

Myspace was too busy. The background music you could choose, themes to change colors and everything just bogged it down into a slow loading mess.
