Why aim so low, go for a school in lower half of the top 10, Purdue would be my choice.

LSU is fine. As long as he tones his nerd down and gets his degrees he will go places.

I've managed grads of all backgrounds from GA Tech to aTm to ULL to LSU to VA Tech.....and the list goes on. The more well rounded, the far more successful he will be.

I myself graduated from LSU and manage my firm's Houston / South Texas operations. I've done ok.....

Sounds silly. But regardless, MIT is top 3 in the world as far as alumni wealth. So...

WTF is this thread? Kids who go to MIT in the sciences are geniuses. They work on research in cutting edge technologies and end up founding start-ups. If you go to MIT then you write your ticket.

Dumbass homer thread if I ever saw one.

Agreed on a few dumnbass posters. Otherwise pretty much spot on. If you want to live in LA/TX then LSU Eng is more than a door-opener.

No doubt LSU engineering is fine. It's not on the same plane as MIT, but few institutions are.

Let's get this straight. The MITs of the world are on a different playing field than engineering in general. As was said, they are on the cutting edge of technology and R&D which is another animal all together.

also, grad school is always possible at these schools as well, so there is that path.

For traditional business successes, an LSU degree is solid.

btw, LSU is nowhere even in the same universe in difficulty as compared to MIT. Saying that is just ridiculous.

i don't know, charles. dirtymike made some really convincing arguments that the faculty at MIT holds the students' hands and guides them to graduation. gotta go with him on that one, sorry.

Big difference in kids that go to Stanford, Harvard and MIT for computer sciences and engineering. Those kids don't get jobs, they make their own. LSU is a great engineering school. I know several that went there. I went to USA and have never had a problem getting a job anywhere.

What I learned on the OT today: LSU engineering is on par with Stanford and MIT.

Technically you learned that it's better because they use the same books, the laws of physics are the same in Massachusetts as in Louisiana but at LSU you are told to man up and make your own way while at MIT they hold your hand and give you your grades to improve their stats.

Did I miss anything?

I just graduated ME from LSU. While the program is widely respected, I found the actual teaching once we got to the ME curriculum to be below average, so he should be prepared to teach himself a LOT. There's obviously a lot of bright kids there like your son, there are also a lot who barely skate by. But assuming he doesn't slack off and lives up to your description of him, he should have no problem getting the higher tier internships which will set him up for some great high-paying offers.

LSU is an awesome school and he will have a great time if he chooses to go, I'd highly recommend it but I am also heavily biased.

In fairness, we need lots of STEM types so, as long as he networks, interns and gets solid grades, going to LSU isn't going to hold him back.

After all, not every last Stanford grad goes to start their own company. The majority go into the working for someone else world as well. Though, the company may have been started by some other Stanford grad.

I was in nearly identical situation as your son coming out of high school, at least the way you describe it.

Grew up LSU fan and went there for mechanical engineering.

No internships (did summer classes to graduate in 4 years and with scholarship), but had solid GPA. Got a job lined up with Baker Hughes before my last semester had even started. Graduated in May 2012 FYI.

He'll be fine.

There's a huge variance in how the same subjects are taught at the same school. I just graduated from lsu in ME. I took fluids one semester and dropped it because of my workload. Took it again the next semester with a different teacher who taught it a different way and made the class much harder. Some of the guys I graduated with had the same experience with thermo. The quality of professor makes a big difference.

Now with regards to the original topic of this thread, I was in the same situation as you hope your kid is going to be. Over a 4.0, high standardized test scores, etc. But growing up going to lsu games, I was infatuated with lsu and there was no way I was going anywhere else. I'm ultimately really happy with my decision, since I have a solid job right out of college and I had a great college experience and I graduated debt free, but I do regret that I didn't apply to any other schools just to test the waters a bit.
