They had the big, heavy, leather wrapped ball, and then the lighter one wrapped in like a paper material. Those were fun and could be hit a far way

Back in high school, we'd play home run derby with cabbage balls. The soft kind that we'd beaten to hell already. We'd use 2nd base as home plate and hit towards the home plate backstop fence.

So, over that at least.

ETA: I have one now I've never hit, but it's not the same. Made by Worth. It's sort of harder and clearly doesn't have the same core the old ones did. This one feels like foam, and I bet could go a LONG way. It would bounce off a bat, where as the old ones just compressed when they got hit. The old ones were filled with string and weren't all that tightly wrapped. We used to beat the covers off them and I'd sew the stiches back up using fishing line. Those were like hitting a bath towel.

Played for St Catherine CYO in late 70s early80s I guess. I played short short and pitched. No way I’d play short short now. Not sure how I survived that.

I haven't hit a cabbage ball since 8th grade. I have no idea how far I could hit one now.
