I guess about 6th grade we rode our bikes to 7/11 and purchased comics and icee. I guess it was 4 miles away. The big thing to us it was out of the subdivision and across two major roads.

I would ride up to the lakefront at the end of Transcontinental, turn right on the lake path to West End and Lakeshore Drive, hang out a couple hours, then ride back, sometimes almost to Kenner, then back home near West Metairie. I never mapped it out but in the summer I would replace tires on my bike, which I haven’t done in years.

At 14 I was making routine 50 mile loops pretty much every afternoon.
you're getting down voted but if you were involved in the amateur bicycle racing scene 50 mile training rides were nothing.

I have friends who have kids younger than that participating in races and in fact a 14yo won a particularly grueling cat4 road race with 50+other riders.

Little piece of shite.

At 14 if you're fit you have a huge advantage on the climbs in a race because the little pecker wood weighed less than 100lbs.

8.7 miles one way to the pool where the rich girls would lay out, did it 3 or 4 times a week. That's a pretty good trip on a 20" Mongoose, my mom had no idea we were going that far, just had to be home by dark.
