It’s actually been a pretty long time since someone made the jump from metro council to the mayor’s office. Recent mayors all did stints in the state legislature before running for mayor.
State reps and senators pretty much have to be independently wealthy because:
1. The job is only full time seasonally (during the session)
2. It doesn’t pay much at all
3. You cannot work for government in any other capacity and run for the legislature
4. Very few jobs are willing to give you a couple months off in the late spring/early summer to dick off in baton rouge.
It’s a lot of paperwork, going to community meetings on proposed projects, approving budgets and contracts for city/parish services, etc. It’s not a do-nothing position as the mayor is also the Parish President, and EBR Parish has almost 450k residents.

You put together a campaign strategy, start campaigning.. The you qualify (which is an assigned date, usually 3 days in which you pay a fee so you can become an official candidate. The requirements are very minimum).
You need money, you can take out a loan and if you become a serious candidate you will get donations. Or you can find someone to back you.
Just a little advice, but plan to go qualify right when the clerk of court office opens on the first day.
The earlier you do so the more free advertisement you get because your name will appear where ever it is reported. If you wait a day or until the last day thats a day or two people will not see your name.
And thats likely when the local media will be there and if you are lucky, they will take a picture for the article. Its small things, but you have to take advantage of any angle you can.

Im from the Trinidad. I mean swb and d not even from BR. This guy I know wants to run for Mayor. But you need money and some fame or buzz round you

Usually, you want to go school board, then state house, then mayor. Typically, a metro council or school board seat just isn’t a high-profile enough gig with a large enough constituency for a candidate to make a runoff.

SWB is the Mayor-President (Mayor of BR, Parish President of EBR) of East Baton Rouge Parish, which means she is over the entire parish.

It’s a little too late to qualify for this go around, and none of the local offices will be up for re-election again for at least 3 more years. I would suggest he run for the state central committee of whatever party he’s a part of. That election will be on the runoff ballot, and qualifying will be at the end of this month. That’s something he could do to start getting involved in his party and getting to know some of the people in the state it might be useful to know should he run for an actual office.

It might help you get to know people, but you have to resign from that job or take unpaid leave of absence once you decide to run. From qualifying to election time, that could be 4 months, over 5 until inauguration.
