3 games a week. *sigh*... my immediate thought is how does a kid handle this load and academics?
It's gonna be tough because high school is so fricking hard you know.

I love it when a thread doesn't turn out quite the way the OP intended it to.

Did you ever sit down and set priorities.
Right now your ego is really big bragging about how athletic your kid is.
One collision or car accident can end his athletic career, then where is he academically?
Why are you sending your kid to school?

So, after 2 years of pee-wee ball and 2 years of JR High ball my kid is finally entering HS.
Coaches told him today he is starting for Freshman team, starting for JV team, and dressing out as 2nd team for Varsity.
Am I the only one who's thinking the sport might not be football? If it is football, this seems a bit much. Why does he need to play freshman if he's starting JV and dressing for varsity? As many others keep saying, 3 football games a week seems a bit much.
If it's another sport like basketball or baseball, 3 games a week is nothing and this isn't an issue.

High School is easy...if he's not dumb he will be fine.
This is dumb though. At my school if you were a freshman who was really good then you started for JV and dressed out with Varsity. Didn't practice with or play with the freshman team at all.

Didn't read whole thread but here goes:
-You don't manage his grades you use this as a teaching moment to help him manage himself.
-Help him set priorities, school first then athletics.(Or whatever your priorities are)
-He needs to learn what to say "NO" to in life. This is the key to success because you can't say "yes" to everything.
-Help him choose the best over the good. The eternal over the temporary.
-You are helping create a "vision" for his life, a long range picture of what he wants his life to look like some day.
-Then love, support and encourage him and be his "coach" as he goes through hi school and beyond allowing him more freedom to make decisions along with bearing the consequences of those decisions.
-It's his life, it will be what he decides it will be.

So your kid is gonna play in 2 games, possibly 3 per week? I know this was supposed to be a subtle brag thread, buuuut turns out, it's just a "you're an idiot parent" thread
^^ luckily for the OP, he didn't have to wait long for the perfect response!

Would it be "extra duty"? He's not practicing anymore than usual, right? It's really just a couple hours more per week.
But why the frick is he starting both Freshman and JV. That's idiotic. Tell the coach he should be playing and practicing with JV and, if you want him to dress for Varsity, he can do that. I just wouldn't have him frick with the freshman team at all

Let Bud Kilmer decide what you should do.

At my HS, Freshmen were part of the JV team. The JV season is not as long as Varsity so you were on the JV team until that season was over and then moved up to Varsity for the remainder of the Varsity season.
Ours was similar, except we had a freshmen only team with a very short season. Games were on Thursday nights and no practice on Fridays.
We never took JV seriously. Games were on Monday nights, and much shorter. I think 8 minute quarters instead of 12 like the Varsity. And our region had 4 teams, so we each played each other twice for only 6 games. Our season was 10 games for Varsity. We'd start JV around week 2-3, and it would end a few weeks before the Varsity season did. It was mostly for underclassmen to get game experience. Otherwise you just practiced all week and rode the pine on Friday nights.

Football it literally the easiest sport to have good grades in, all games are thursday night or Friday night and only one a week. Try playing baseball, soccer, or basketball where you have two+ games a week or a tournament 5 hours away all weekend. It really sucks having two away games during the week and not getting back until midnight on a tuesday.
There's absolutely no way I'd let my freshmen son play Varsity football unless he was above average in size AND talent. Let him learn the basics and play with kids his size.
Given that, you'll be cock blocking him as a freshmen on varsity will be pulling some serious wool.

I would imagine they will let the season get started and see how things go. If he is truly a starter on JV, freshman ball will get dropped.

He would either be practicing those days or playing games. The time invested isn't really that different. He should be fine.
