Or travel and bring home $165,000 or stay in school, get a degree, live at your Mother's house because that degree is worthless and your in debt a hundred grand.

If those are your only two options, then sure. I would have preferred a smaller house and seeing my dad.

It's not easy, but a father's job is to provide for his family.

I'm in a bind and this is good money so I'll take it. If I had my druthers I'd be close to home but with all the layoffs going on right now I'm lucky to have an offer.

I respect that. You do what you have to do. It won't be an easy talk but neither was the last one. Just be straight up. "Dad has to go work so you can eat and have clothes." It sucks man, but it is what is is.

When mine were young (they're teenagers now), I'd tell them I was leaving, and that I would be coming back.

I would talk to them on the phone before they went to bed, and they'd usually sleep with their mother.

If I was gone more than a few days, or somewhere "exciting," I'd bring back a souvenir.

You are making the right choice, your family knows that. Don't listen to people in here giving you shite because they don't know. People work away and have an awesome family and life.

Not everyone can have shite easy and handed to them

I just can't turn down good per diem and double time. It's too good an opportunity to pass up just because it takes me away from home

Man, parents are way more sensitive to their kids feelings these days. Mine parents would have been like "your dad has to go away for awhile to work, the company isn't sure when he will be finished. You will be able to talk to him on the phone from time to time." and I probably wouldn't think twice about it.
I agree.

Either my mom would tell me he will be gone for a few days or he would tell me to be good and listen to my mother. It wasn't a big deal.

I am gone 6 weeks back for one week. I don't have kids. I just enjoy time home with my wife. We text during the day and facetime at night.
