A vet once told me;

"Good dogs depend on good owners to let them go when it's time."

The process is totally painless for the dog.

It's hard but it's the right thing to do.

When my baby girl couldn't hold her rear end up anymore, I knew it was time. She was about 15. Happened 2+ years ago.

Sounds like it's time for your girl to head to the Rainbow Bridge.

*edit: the night before, she and I both dined on $40 worth of ribeyes from Calandro's.

It's a gut call, but when you feel like the quality of life isn't worth it, you gotta deal with the issue. I had to do it last week, it sucks, but that's what you sign up for when you own a pet. They were there to make your life a better place, protect you, and bring you joy. The least you can do is make sure they don't suffer at the end.

Yea it's time if she can't get up. The longer you
let it go the more you hate your self later thinking
you let her suffer too long.

That sucks and I'm sorry to hear it. My dog is 9.5 and he can still walk, but it's hard for him to get up and almost impossible on the slick wood. I think in my heart I know that when he can't walk on his own, it will be time.

There will be some relief as bad as it sounds, because it hurts my heart every time I hear him whimper while getting up. But it will never feel like you're ready.

The fact that you started this thread tells me that it's probably time. I've been through it twice...It's a very hard thing to do, but it's better for the dog when they are suffering.

Lack of quality of life is the time to let your friend go to the rainbow bridge. Yea, it is hard, but you have to consider pain and suffering. If your pup cannot walk it is certain that he/she experiences discomfort by not being able to move around. We had an older dog (18 yrs) and she got to a point where she had trouble walking and would fall from tripping over her own paws. When this happened she was unable to get up on her own. One day she was down in the corner of our yard while we were at work. That was so horrible and helped us make the decision. So sorry.

I've been through it. Ours had a tumor next to her bladder which caused her to go uncontrollably and even piss blood. She was also basically blind and was declining in overall health pretty quickly.

While our family was having a discussion on whether we should put her down or not, she came in and pissed blood on the floor. That was as clear of a sign as you can get. We took her the next day. It was a very quick and peaceful process. We were in the room when they did it. Very tough to watch her go through. However, I definitely dont regret being there.

I've asked myself this more times than I wish to remember but I have ALWAYS known when it is time, and so will you. Nobody in this thread can tell you when you should but you will 100% know when it is time.

The fact that you're thinking it means it's probably time. It's safe to say that the vast majority of dog owners wait way too long to do right by their pets, simply because they can't bear the thought of losing them. When the thought of seeing your best friend in such a state overwhelms your desire to keep her near, then the decision becomes much easier.

Had to put my 11-year-old Lab, Belle, down a little more than three years ago. I had been thinking the time was near for a few months, but I came home one day and just knew. I couldn't stand to see her that way any more. Toughest thing I've ever had to do. Held her in my arms till she breathed her last.

Damn. Of all the times for my allergies to act up.

Prayers sent.

I am really struggling with this right now, too. 15 year old lab. Never whines like he is in pain but his back legs give out from under him all the time dropping him to the floor. Have to block off our stairs bc he wants to come upstairs with us but can only make it half way and cries. He can't go further up and can't go down. He's also covered with literally hundreds of tumors that occasionally burst and spray blood all over the house until I can get him to the vet to have them treated. Hubby can't let him go bc he's not in pain. I feel like his quality of life is greatly diminished. So sad.

Thanks for the responses. For those that have done this, did you do something special the day before? Steak dinner, boat ride, etc?

i had to do this 2 weeks ago with a 12 yr old black lab. He had terrible tumor on foot that would not heal. Surgery at his age to aputate was really out of the question. We decided long as he wasnt showing pain, suffering, and eating we would hold off. He lasted almost a year and would get up and play and wag tail and eat... and then all of a sudden we went to feed him and he wouldnt get up. went to check on him and he would just turn his head... we knew.

I put my lab down when her quality of life didn't allow her to do the things she loved best, which was fetching, running and swimming. It was a very tough decision for me and I'm getting emotional typing this, even though it was over 5 years ago. My vet was very supportive and non-judgement. I was allowed to be in the room. After the injection the staff left the room so I could be alone with my dog as she fell asleep for the last time. Yes. I cried as I held her.
