Yes. Get him involved in little league or boy scouts.
Can you do Boy scouts if you never did cub scouts? And he is going to middle school next year. Hopeflly he makes friends. Hell, even I had 2 best friends at his age.

There are dozens of tips I could give him as I struggled with the same problem during my childhood. The most important thing you can do is ALWAYS smile. His default look is probably not very happy looking, and most people wont assert themselves in conversations with people who dont look very happy. This may sound stupid to most of you, but for some people such as myself this can be a lifesaver.

Maybe he doesn't want to make friends.
Some people just want to watch the world burn.

when I was 11 I knew I would only be friends with the neighborhood kids due to proximity...I was a little too cerebral.

Do you have a neighborhood pool. My son seems to make two or three new friends everytime he goes for a swim.

Joining the Boy Scouts might be an ideal place.
Click the link for various merit badges and see if some of these pique his interest. LINK
Edit to add: guess I should read all the replies before posting. I second or third the scouting suggestion.

Get him a flatbill and a manziel t-shirt
Posted on 7/8/14 at 11:19 am to The Goon Squad
trying to get him in flag football if mom let me. I need to see how he interacts with other kids.

Go in his room and throw away any electronics in the except for his phone.
Sign him up for a summer camp, any camp...basketball, baseball, soccer, etc
Whatever it takes! Get him in situations where he is forced to be social and exposes to others his age with similar interests

This is the best answer. Let kids know that being outgoing and making new friends and acquaintances is the norm.

At the age the OP brother is, this is the best way for a child to make friends.

My seven year old son has countless friends that wear this crap. One kid came over the other day with red socks and Nike slippers.

Nevermind, kind of skimmed the OP and thought it was your son.

Organized sports is a great idea.
Is he any good? Be prepared to work with him to get to where he's decent. He may have the same problem if he's on a sports team and the kids are jackasses and outcast him because he sucks. Do whatever you can to help him
