How bad was flying when people could smoke on planes?

Was it just a cloud in the cabin?

smoking was the norm. nobody gave 2 sheets.
It wasn't too bad since the planes were rarely full due to the cost of the tickets.
You could spread out and the seats were more roomy. Southwest Airlines Stews wore hot pants and weren't bad looking.
I wish I could go back in time.

I wish I knew. Would have been nice to fire up a cigar, drink bourbon from a real glass, and smack the arse of a flight attendant that was 22 years old, 5'7" and 125 lbs, instead of having a plastic cup for my woodford, stale air, and some tub of lard crashing the drink cart into me while she's pushing 60 and 195.
Back in those days, Boeing had to test out the cabin air filters in the worst conditions. Someone I know that worked at Boeing had a friend that was a smoker that also worked at Boeing and volunteered to help out with these tests. They packed the plane full of smokers, she joined in and when she got off that plane, she never smoked again

Flew from Miami to Lima Peru and the cabin got thick with the smoke. Factor in the turbulence of passing over the Andes and i thought I was gonna turn green.

We must have been on the same flight. You forgot to mention her shitty attitude.

Flew on a smoking flight from NO to NYC back in the early 70's as a kid. I remember the soot stains on the ceilings and walls of the cabin. Good times.

The guys doing maintenance on the planes would locate leaks in the door seals by looking for the brown tar and nicotine stain that would form on the outside of the seal where the leaking air passed.

It was awesome to smoke on planes, and everywhere else

The good ole days
no doubt, smoke got pretty thick on airplanes...however, it was really the norm everywhere and honestly, not much worse than most offices...
the only saving grace was that ticket costs were a lot higher, so the folks around you were typically a bit higher caliber and airplanes were seldom full so you could almost always get up and move if you got seated by a chain smoker...

People smoked everywhere and few people noticed. It was just a normal part of life.
