The average American has philistine tastes and sketchy-at-best kitchen skills. Where else they gonna have family dinners?

typically sushi places and gastro pubs

it's referred to as reverse happy hour and usually between 8-11pm

They offer nothing as far as quality or price point.
they are cheap and that is why they stay in business

Also a lot of poor people don’t know any better because that’s all they’ve been exposed to. They actually see going to Applebee’s as a good night out and good food. A lot of people in a ruston fb group were pretty upset when Applebee’s closed recently

Plus a lot of small towns don’t have anything better to offer. If I want tasty margaritas or chicken fried steak, I got to chili’s

Name a restaurant besides Chile's with two happy hours every day lol

A lot of places have work happy hour, 3-6 or 4-7 and then a late one after 9 or 10.

I would just find a bar nearby with a happy hour going on during that time. If you live in Dallas, I'm sure there are plenty of options.

There aren't many more depressing places to get drunk at than a Chilis if you ask me. Trust me, I know from experience.

Server entitlement mentally and poor service expectation virus ruined the full-service restaurant experience.

People, especially families, enjoy safe choices. You’ll never have an exceptional meal these places but your unlikely to have a shitty one compared to expectations.

Not saying it’s right, but people put their trust and money into things they know more so than not.

I eat Chili’s when traveling for work more than I care to admit.

They have 2 healthy fulfilling meals that I know are the same at every restaurant.

I do try to eat local when I can but sometimes you just want something dependable.

I think I’ve eaten at my local Chili’s 3x in 10
Years.

I haven’t been to Applebee’s in probably 8 years and it was because a coworker wanted to go.

The answer is that our country should be called the United States of Generica. So many people in this country are OK with mediocre and generic. There are vast areas of the country that look exactly like the next town or state over.

They had this huge restaurant in the terminal with a ton of TVs and every table/bar chair had its own Ipad where you ordered from. You could customize everything in your order and was promptly brought out by a server. It kind of blew my mind and made me think that is where the food service business is headed.

It’s not like this at most airports?
Newark JFK and LGA are all like this

In many small towns, Applebees is open late and has a bar, so the staff at all the other crap places you mentioned go there to drink and eat post shift. Chili's seems to do ok at airports bc of the limited options. Other than that, your point if taken.
