How and why did replacement windows become so outrageously expensive?

It’s not uncommon to get a quote for 10 window replacements for upwards of $30,000. What gives?

You’re welcome to find cheap single pane single hung windows made out of cheap plastic and have some illegal labor rip and replace.

It's a great question. Window replacement is definitely overvalued currently.

how much is the labor?

i remember helping my dad replace some huge windows on the back side of the house and we had to take off a huge amount of siding on the back side of the house before we could even touch the windows

I got 21 windows replaced for $14k last year.
Double pane, Hurricane rated.

I’d call around.

Yes. I understand labor is costly. But we’re not talking about huge windows here. I’ve seen others replaced in the neighborhood. They never have to remove siding or anything like that. Just the trim.

I’m assuming the estimates you received were all over the place?

Almost identical from Acadian windows here. Very satisfied.

Just starting to look around. I’ve heard local companies offer good quality and more reasonable prices.

Actually, I thought it’d be more, so I didn’t call anybody else.

Wasn’t even planning on replacing. Met this older lady at a weekend festival who had a booth. It was like 2pm, I was chasing my 4 yr old around, and she looked lonely. I signed up for a call, this older guy showed up at like 7pm, gave a quote. I was satisfied and bada bing.

Pro-tip - replace the glass only, not the frames.

You're welcome.

This.

$30k for 10 windows is dramatic. I did 27 windows at my last house for $14k as well from Relief several years ago, and we just did 24 windows in our current house from Window World for about the same price in February. The Relief quote was more expensive than WW, but they still weren't anywhere near double the price for half the number of windows.
