Or, you can just start sending whatever you can monthly and they will be fine. as long as you're trying they will not hurt your credit

In addition to working out a payment plan, try to make a deal with them to only pay a percentage of the total bill. They likely do this a lot too.

Call the billing dept and tell them you can't afford it. The first option they'll give you is a payment plan. Tell them it's too expensive. They'll then give you a dramatically lower total price. Then get a payment plan for that amount.
Welcome to the most absurd payment-for-services system the First World has ever known.

1st pay some on your current bill.. just to show good faith intentions to pay it out...
2nd... Contact your insurance and get them to explain to you why they did not pay your bill. Some if it will probably be deductable type of stuff. Other items may not be paid due to coding issues and what not. Once you find out the reasons, you will be in a position to go back to the hospital billing and negotiate/contest some of the items your insurance took issue with...
I once had a hospital balance that my insurance would not pay in the neighborhood of 4K. My Insurance urged me not to pay it with explicit reasons why... I contested this balance with the hospital billing/collection for almost 18 months. Without going into the nuances of consumer protection issues regarding billing and contesting amounts... I insisted on a breakdown of what of the charges were for which I have a right to before I pay the bill...
What resolved the issue was I connected with someone in their billing dept that new what they were doing.. after reviewing the info they determined the issue was the "bill" was coded incorrectly. She recoded and reissued the bill to the insurance. My insurance paid the bill in 30 days.
You will need to be very patient and reasonable when dealing with this issue...

Check the bill, 90% of the time they eff the billing coding and charge an absurd amount.
I watch all doctors bills and compare them with the insurance statement. Unbelievable how many mistakes are made and the mistakes always benefit the medical provider.

Its happened for me more than once. I don't know why they bill such a large number when they know they'll accept 10-20%.
How much does that feed in to the "health care is too expensive" issue.

Thanks for all the info. I was starting to wonder how the hell people pay medical bills when they're super sick and what not.

I've always heard that you can pay very little per month as long as it's something and you're okay. Even $20.
Also, always be proactive and double check billing. Keep old bills and a record of payment (on an excel spreadsheet for example) for larger procedures. Pretty much 95% chance they'll try to screw you in some way.

From an ER perspective, it doesn't seem like most people pay their bills. These are also the same people that don't care about their credit scores or their debt.
It really sucks, because I'll see people that don't want procedures and tests done. They are scared of what their bill will end up, and these people are the ones that actually need the care.
Then, there are the people that don't care about the bill, because they don't pay it and want everything and anything done. They also want the $500 Tylenol from the hospital, that gets charged to who knows, instead of going to the Dollar Store.

I'm 25 so I'm still double covered by my parents, so the insurance already took care of like the first $4k.
fricking Obama, huh?

It's because the system is utterly corrupt and broken and was allowed to develop in this bubble that had nothing to do with reality. And Thanks Obama, for codifying it. Some of my favorite things:
1. Blue Cross faithfully sending me a notice of what they didn't pay any part of, that I've already paid, several days after I paid it. I'm talking about Rx I pick up at the pharmacy. Sending all those pointless letters ain't free.
2. An internist receiving (not just billing, but being paid) $500 over 4 days for perhaps 20 minutes of visitation in the hospital for a patient who is on autopilot.
3. Humana sending a "denial of claim" notice that really is just some internal bookkeeping about them switching a charge from one code to another, that has absolutely no bearing on what the patient owes, and thus the patient doesn't need to see. All it does is cost postage and paperwork and make the patient worry and call to verify what he suspects is actually true, that it was a bullshite letter.
4. A hospital billing literally 4x what they end up accepting from insurance. That sort of overbilling is rampant.

Been a while since I've dealt w med bills (Mrs. 19's area of expertise) but it used to be, don't pay squat until your ins. Sends you an EoB (Explanation of Benefits). It should contain procedure codes billed, and the allowable amount for each, and the %age the policy paid.
For example, OLOLRMC may charge $3200 for an MRI, but BCBS only allows $1500 per MRI. You don't pay the difference, OLOL doesn't collect it. You should owe about 20% of $1500. Or nothing with a 20% supplemental.
If Obama screwed this up, I dunno. This was before his time.

I mean Are there payment installments or how does it work?
Yes, it's typical for most people to pay in installments.
In fact, lots of places will give a nice little discount to those who actually go ahead and pay in full.

Why should you have to be part of "the club" to get the (semi) legit pricing? Can you imagine needing to buy "insurance" to get good pricing on groceries or a new car? It's all horseshite.

Oh, I agree. Completely.
But for what I have to shell out per month to cover my family, I have paid this discount many times over when compared to how often I've benefitted from it.
It's a matter of which end they stick it in ya.

The hospital might still be trying to collect from insurances. Make sure you look at an EOB to see if you really owe that much. Don't be afraid to challenge the bill Explanation Of Benefits. Are you white? Sorry.
