In fact, lots of places will give a nice little discount to those who actually go ahead and pay in full.
And just be forewarned, some won't. When we got the hospital bill for when I had my daughter my benefits person told me to call and ask for a discount to pay in full. The hospital told me I had already received discounted pricing through my insurance and they weren't budging. Even when I got an itemized bill and went through and questioned some charges, they said that insurance issued a bundled payment and they were unable to extract certain charges to know if it was "paid for" already or not.
So even though we had the money to pay the bill in full right then and there, we stretched out the payments for two years. Didn't cost us anything extra since it was 0% interest but they sure had to wait a long time to get all of their money.

Well, just got off the phone with my insurance and the hospital.
Whoever did the paperwork at the hospital took one of my insurance information down incorrectly and left two numbers off of my member id #. She also managed to spell my name wrong somehow.
Regardless, they claim they're fixing it.
Thanks again for all the help!

Dude...I just paid off 2200 dollars in a year to a hospital in Gonzales. Just pay something reasonable each paycheck or monthly and you should have no problems.
No one expects to go to the ER. Shite like that happens. I spent 4 days in the hospital with pancreatic and have good insurance. I paid the hospital about 150 dollars a month. You make an honest effort and people will work with you.

you can pay them off in payments.. even if they don't set it up that way.. as long as you are sending in some sort of amount every month then that will suffice

very glad to hear that this worked itself out...
just think how many folks in this world would have really struggled to pay that off, when it was all due to some clerical errors...

The practice of sending patients bills with gross charges needs to stop. It's ridiculous and causes needless anxiety.

you know you can negotiate a hospital bill, right? call and ask to speak to the hospital billing administrator... they'd rather see you pay at least some of it, rather than nothing.... make it personal... make it sincere and that you WANT to pay, but the price is too much to take on, and if they can just work with you a bit, you can pay the negotiated new price...
the worst they can tell you is no, and even then, there are avenues after that.... it's always negotiable...

Yes. Go up there and talk to the insurance and billing department. Tell them you cannot afford that and Tell them what you can pay per month.

Yep. When I had my wisdom teeth out the oral surgeon's office told me they'd bill my health insurance for the surgery portion(anaesthesiologist, the medications they used to put me under, etc etc etc) It was an outpatient surgery center place attached to the oral surgeon's office. They said whatever myb health insurance didn't cover would just be waived. I would receive no bill.
I checked my health claims on the insurance website and saw that they submitted a claim for over $12,000. My health insurance paid about $1400. No way their just eating $10,600. The health insurance claim industry is such a scam IMO.
Was $12,000 the gross charges or the amount after the contractual adjustments? Adjusting off $10,600 of the balance to account for the payors contractual amount is plausible.

I help employees all the time who receive outrageous hospital bills and then their insurance shows something as not covered. Most of the time, it's a billing/coding issue on the end of the hospital. Once that is fixed and the claim is resubmitted to the insurance company, it's usually much less they actually owe. The other surprising error I see is that employees don't throw away their old insurance card OR they tell the pharmacy or doctor's office their insurance info is the same, when in fact it is not.

i love when people get new insurance cards... i guess they figure we get their insurance cards at the same time they do or something, so they never bother to let us know they have new insurance until AFTER i'm done filling their shite.... and just so everyone knows, we DON'T know you have new insurance unless you tell us you have new insurance.... we don't magically get that information at the same time you do...

that is good...having someone to help them with this crap can really put employee's mind at ease at a time when they are already stressed from being sick...
we actually just hired someone in our corporate headquarters solely to act as a "patient advocate" in just such situations...unfortunately, the company screwed up when they introduced the idea and it kind of came across as someone who was going to be telling us which doctor we should go to, etc....
