This may sound crazy, but have your wife test drive each vehicle and buy the one she likes best.

I drove a 99 corolla that was basically held together by duct tape. had to stick my hand in to the door to open it and walk around to let the passenger out. was 3 different colors. when I sold it there were 315k miles on it and the air conditioner still worked.

They are exactly the same except for the areas in which they are different.

Much prefer the civic, but either is a fine choice.

I’ve had a Corolla for my Lyft or Uber ride almost 70% of the time. Seem to be pretty common among the rideshare grinders.

Aside from that they are the same though, right?

Also, do all the new cars have cvt transmissions now? I hope not because I never heard nothing positive about them.

I've had no issues with the CVT in my car. Fuel efficient, but not that inspiring to drive though.

Elantra.

Atkinson Cycle engine, no CVT, good warranty, and cheaper.

In terms of reliability/durability :

Tier 1 - can handle any kind of abuse

Toyota Corolla/iM
Honda Civic
Subaru Crosstrek

Tier 2 - good car if you are diligent with service and don’t abuse it.

VW Jetta/Golf
Nissan Sentra
Hyundai Elantra
Chevy Cruze
Kia Forte

Tier 3 - Slightly below average, but serviceable

Ford Focus
Mazda3
Mini Cooper

Tier 4 - RUN away

Dodge Dart
Mitsubishi Lancer
Fiat 500

Longevity Corolla

Less expensive parts Corolla

Know several people who have corolla's with 300,000 plus miles and still dependable

I own two Corollas

Corolla will be more trouble free. Civics are very good but have always had transmission issues, as other Hondas and Acuras. Civics were considered sportier but the new Corollas have really been made nice. I think also if you drive both you might feel the Toyota has a more solid feeling. Good luck.

cvt transmissions aren’t as reliable as some make you think. Have a Honda CRV - transmission completely blew around 90,000 miles.

Of course it had a woman driver for 80,000 of those miles so that probably explains it too
