Hiring a home improvement contractor
I am getting some bids to add a pantry in my house. One of the contractors said he would show me his license and insurance when we agreed on a price for the job. Is this normal?

There is this thing that exists, its called Google. Search him and his business if you are uncomfortable. See what pops up

This is the same dude that is going to ask you to pay for the job up front and then disappear. Do NOT give them money up front. If they say they need “money for materials”, get a list of what they need and buy it yourself. Better yet, hire a legitimate contractor who can afford to buy the materials on their own.

Small project...

I'm a licensed GC in North Carolina.

Our remodeling projects average 60k...

The last 3 are 100k...one is 210k.

Adding a pantry is handyman services type scope...most aren't licensed...but should have insurance.

And yes, homeowners pay deposit...and pay in draws..

Contractors are not banks...

Our time is valuable like everyone else's.

You want free estimate?

You want it built before you have skin in the game?

What else you want?

Here's the reality, good contractors are very busy these days... if you want to hire a good one be prepared to pay and be willing to work under their terms or you can hire someone off Craigslist and roll the dice.

then it will look like a handyman did it. No thanks.

depends on the job and contractor. My current contractor is great and one of the most reputable in my area. He absolutely will not take money upfront. His words are, “that’s just not how I do business. You pay me when the job is done and you are satisfied.”

yes, and if you aren’t willing to give me one then you can go kick rocks.

although true, people can always choose to go with a reputable contractor that has great terms and doesn’t come off as a pompous prick.

Typical asshat GC riding the current building boom. When the market swings back, which it will, your pompous tone will change.

is this in AL?

LA has a website you can at least see if he has an active work comp policy.

That guy likely doesn't have shite in place if he can provide a certificate with a bid.

Louisiana has a license lookup online.

I'm sure if we have it, all the other states have it. It's painless and takes like 5 seconds online.

freaking google is amazing

No, its not normal, and the next thing he's going to do is ask you to put up half the contract price so he can go buy materials.

If he can't buy materials to do the work before you pay him, then he's not a real contractor.

On the other hand, don't be surprised if a real contractor asks you to show him proof that you have the funds to pay him.

That's just good business.

Had to do this recently. One fricker sent me a license and I called the state office to check it bc it looked weird. Turned out he photoshopped his license and insurance. I reported him to Angie’s list and the state office

You’re getting paid to do a trade man. Cut out the attitude, you aren’t any different from thousands of other GCs
