What are yalls thoughts on Starwood hotel prices? I did a quick check for houston and almost all pricing was 200+. Their loyalty program is enticing, but I also can't blow my budget the first 6 months of the year.

i stayed at the Waldorf in Orlando recently. nice digs.
but honestly we spent more time at the hilton next door as the pool was more kid friendly.
if you really want the beach, check out the Waldorf Beach Club in Boca. i used points there but still spent about a hundred a day just tipping people.

80% of hotels don't qualify to use points and it takes a minimum of 30k points to get a free night. Compared to IHG which can be as little as 5,000 points
?? I've never picked a hotel that didn't take points for nights. And Hampton Inn are usually around 20k/night (I've never and will never use points to stay there, though).
With Diamond and the never-ending quarterly bonuses, I usually average 25-30 points/dollar.

I can generally get the Westin at the Galleria for $79 a night through Hotwire.
Staying in Dallas next week at a Westin property and I'm only paying $65 a night through Hotwire as well.
Based upon this cheap rate, I decided not to use my Hilton points.

Hilton Carib San Juan.
That is true T-Rob. I haven't stayed there in a couple of years and was a bit dated then. I find myself staying at the Hilton in Ponce' or the Embassy Suites in Bayoman when in PR for business these days. Old San Juan is much better for vacation or perhaps the Coronado area.

I just booked a trip to Chicago free on points. HHonors points for Conrad Hotel, SW airlines points 2 free flights MSY-MDW.
Was debating between Chicago or San Diego, we have never been to either place. I have no shame admitting that I look for nonstops on SW out of MSY as priority travel locations. Have done DEN, NYC, etc all because SW flies there nonstop.

it's great if you only travel places that have westins or W's. but there just isn't enough properties imo.
i'd much rather stay at an embassy suites than a sheraton.

You can get the two room suite with Residence Inn just about everywhere you can find an ES, and you get free breakfast! That being said, I'm an HH Diamond and a Marriott Platinum this year, but don't any Marriott nights for next year yet.

I use the crap out of Hilton points...handy at Mardi Gras because of locations on the lake side of the parade routes...
just finished 5 days at the Hampton Inn on Carondolet (which is the nicest one in the whole chain)...may grab a night or two at the Roosevelt over the summer to get my stays up, surgery last year screwed up my travel cycle and am only silver at this point...

Waldorf Astoria, Trianon Palace Versailles.
Go to Paris. Get out of the city and visit Versaille. Here is a view of the palace from outside your balcony.
400k in points will get you a few nights here, then, take the TGV up to Antwerp, Belgium and stay a night or two here:

Waldorf Casa Marina in Key West is money.
Wife and I used points a few years back to make a little escape- really nice.
