She had to build clients, which she did over a short period of time. It came down to working for a crappy owner. If it was a decent owner, she still would be making $35K. She worked somewhere else for a bit part time, and if she were full time her salary would have been in the range.
This was 10+ years ago, so factor in wage adjustments.

Believe it or not- I paid for college using my own money... Since then tuition has more than doubled at my school, curiously at the same rate as loan limits rose and well above inflation or even the stock market.

What the woman in the OP was going into was never going to afford her the money to pay that back.
She shouldn’t have been allowed to take out the loan in the first place.
Why is it that student loans are the area where we suddenly become all “free” with loans?
