This stretch of beach has never had life guards for the most part. Would be very hard to cover all that coast. People need to use common sense and take responsibility for themselves. A rip current shouldn’t be a fatal event.

“I’m beyond frustrated at the situation that we have with tragic and unnecessary deaths in the Gulf,” Bay County Sheriff Tommy Ford wrote in a Facebook post, accompanied by an aerial view that shows deep trenches that rip currents dug into the shoreline along Panama City Beach. “I have watched while deputies, firefighters and lifeguards have risked their lives to save strangers. I have seen strangers die trying to save their children and loved ones, including two fathers on Father’s Day.”
Ford says his deputies have been cursed at as they’ve tried to warn visitors of the “life-threatening dangers” in the Gulf of Mexico.
He said deputies have handed out $500 fines when they’ve seen people in the water during double red flag days.
“We don’t have the resources or time to cite every single person that enters the water but we do our absolute best to use it as a deterrent to entering the water,” Ford said, explaining that an arrest is only authorized upon a second offense, unless the person resists law enforcement.

If there are warning signs everywhere then that’s on them. We don’t need police officers standing on a fricking beach babysitting people. They need to be out doing real police stuff.
If there is a sign that specifically says ROAD CLOSED - DO NOT ENTER and someone ignores that sign and drives their car off the Cliff, how is that anyone’s fault but the person who IGNORED the sign?

Why the hell aren’t local authorities doing more? They should have more life guards and sheriff’s deputies in the water.
Why the hell are people still going in the water? Figuring out if it safe isn't difficult. Where does the responsibility of the individual come in?

Why does it matter where they are from? Do you not educate yourself on the destinations you travel to? There are signs explaining the flags on every beach access. It’s on big road signs coming into PCB, it’s all over social media. These deaths were completely avoidable.

Everyone knows it is deadly yet dumbasses get in the water.
It gets like this every now and then. A couple years ago they had the Sheriff Dept helicopter and Coast Guard yelling at people to get out of the water, as in hovering above the water to get morons to move under threat of arrest.
...and then they get back in.
If we are being honest, many of these folks are not swimmers. And others are drunk and/or high. What are you gonna do for them?

Also (at least in Destin) a lot of restaurants post the flag system on take out bags, menus, etc. I mean the flag system is everywhere including hotels, condo rooms, billboards, BEACH ENTRANCES, etc etc etc
Is it horrible? Absolutely it is but I don’t know what else they can do to keep people informed about the flag system with warning signs

Exactly. It’s like the idiots who go to Yellowstone every year and try and get close to the bison.

It’s pretty simple. Swim in the condo’s pool and only use ocean to piss. Rip current unlikely to get me dick deep and 4 feet from beach.

So, you want to blame everything bad that happens to you on someone else?
YOU are part of the problem that society is in today! Take responsibility for your actions!

Need to go steeper than that. Take into consideration the cost of having to rescue these folks who ignore the flags.

Is perdido/gulf shores/ orange beach issuing these 500$ fines?
I need to get in the water to urinate.

There's flags and warning signs explaining what each color flag means at every public beach access point. People just ignore them because they don't want the weather ruining their vacation fun.
Lifeguards can tell one group to get out of the water, then as soon as the lifeguard walks 100' further down the beach to tell another group to get out, the first group of goes right back in.

Eh. As a Kentuckian who has spent a few decades at the beach in the summer, you have to be an idiot to miss info about rip tides/rough water because it’s typically posted everywhere.
At some point, it’s on people to pay attention. We always check for info about red tide, rip tides, and lightning in the area when planning to head out the door to the beach. It’s not hard.
